Beginning Fall 2018, and thereafter, all incoming Florida College System and State
University System students
must demonstrate civic literacy competency prior to graduation.
1. Undergraduate degree-seeking students initially entering a state university in the
2018-19 academic year through the 2020-21 academic year must
demonstrate competency in civic literacy through one of the following options prior
to graduation.
Students must successfully complete one of the options listed below in either (a) or (b), in order to meet the Civic Literacy requirement.
(a) Successfully complete one of the courses listed below, with a passing grade of "C" or higher:

- American National Government - POS 2041
- U.S. History Since 1877 - AMH 2020

(b) Achieve the standard score on one of the following assessments:

- The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Naturalization Test–Civics (U.S. history and government) with supplemental questions, score of 60 or higher required
- Advanced Placement Government and Politics: United States, score of 3 or higher required
- Advanced Placement United States History, score of 4 or higher required
- CLEP American Government, score of 50 or higher required

2. Undergraduate degree-seeking students initially entering a state university during
the 2021-22 academic year, and thereafter, must
demonstrate competency in civic literacy by completing (a) and (b) prior to graduation:
Students must successfully complete both section (a) and (b) shown below, in order to meet the Civic Literacy requirement.
(a) Successfully complete one of the courses listed below, passing with a grade of "C" or higher:

- American National Government - POS 2041
- U.S. History Since 1877 - AMH 2020

(b) Successfully complete the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Naturalization
Test – Civics (U.S. history and government) with
supplemental questions, achieving the standard score of 60 or higher.

(c) Additionally, students may meet both of the competency requirements in 2(a) and 2(b) through accelerated mechanisms as specified below.

- Students may meet the course requirement in 2(a) by successfully passing dual enrollment versions of POSX041 American Government or AMHX020 Introductory Survey Since 1877, or through achieving the standard score on the Cambridge AICE History, CLEP History of the United States II, or the I.B. History exams.
- Students may meet both of the course requirement in 2(a) and the exam requirement in 2(b) by achieving a passing score on the Advanced Placement Government and Politics: United States, Advanced Placement United States History, or CLEP American Government.

- You can take the civics test for free if you are currently enrolled in either POS 2041 or AMH 2020.
- Civic exam window will open each term, after the Add or Drop date, and close on the
last day of class.
Dates provided on FGCU's Academic Calendar. - Failure to take the exam during your course window, will forfeit your free attempt.
To schedule your free attempt, email us at testing@fgcu.edu from your fgcu student email account with the following:
- Include your Full Name, Eagle Email address, UIN and the course you are currently enrolled in that qualifies you for the free attempt.
- If you are currently enrolled in POS 2041 or AMH 2020, do not use Registerblast to
sign up and pay for the test.
If you do not achieve the minimum passing score of 60 or if you delay taking the test until after you complete the course, you will have to pay the proctoring fee to take this required exam.
You can take the test online from home, using a personal computer:
- Purchase the test from our Online Store
- Email us the order number, Eagle Email address, full name and UIN
- You will receive an invitation to the Canvas "Civic Literacy Test" group and an email with instructions
You can take the exam in-person by making an appointment through Registerblast.
If you paid the exam fee and you need to take the test again because you did not achieve the minimum passing score, do not pay again.
Email us to add one more attempt to your test in Canvas.
We recommend arriving at least fifteen minutes before your appointment time.
The primary form of acceptable identification is your Eagle ID.
- If you are taking the online version of the exam, then you need to present it to the webcam for identification purposes
- If you are taking the in-person version, you may optionally bring an acceptable and not-expired form of government-issued identification with signature and photo.
