Academic Early Alerts
Identify concerns early. Coordinate support. Keep students on track.
Early Alerts within Wings Up for Student Success provide a structured, campus-wide way for faculty to identify students who may be experiencing academic or engagement challenges and connect them to timely, coordinated support. This shared process allows faculty to raise concerns early, reduce handoffs, and ensure students receive the right support at the right time.
-
What Is an Early Alert?
Toggle More InfoAn Early Alert is a non-punitive notification submitted when a student shows signs they may need additional support. Alerts help campus partners intervene early, before challenges escalate, and ensure concerns are visible to the right support teams. Early Alerts are not disciplinary and do not negatively impact a student’s academic record.
-
When to Submit an Early Alert
Toggle More InfoSubmit an Early Alert when you notice patterns or behaviors that suggest a student may benefit from additional support. These indicators often emerge early in the semester and can include:
-
Lack of attendance or disengagement
-
Missed assignments or declining academic performance
-
Concerning changes in behavior or communication
-
Difficulty navigating university processes or expectations
To support timely and consistent outreach, FGCU has developed First 6 Weeks Early Alert Timeline to help faculty and staff identify common indicators that tend to surface during the first half of the term and understand when early intervention is most impactful.
When in doubt, submit an alert. Early outreach matters, and raising a concern early allows the campus to respond before challenges escalate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Toggle More Info-
What is an Early Alert?
Toggle More InfoAn Early Alert is a structured way for faculty to share concerns about a student’s academic engagement, performance, or wellbeing so the appropriate support teams can intervene early and coordinate outreach.
-
When should I submit an Early Alert?
Toggle More InfoSubmit an Early Alert when you observe patterns or early indicators that a student may be at risk, rather than waiting for a single incident to escalate. Common indicators include repeated absences, missed assignments, disengagement, or changes in behavior that emerge during the first several weeks of the term.
FGCU’s First 6 Weeks Timeline outlines key milestones and signals that often appear early in the semester and highlights when outreach is most effective.
-
What happens after I submit an Early Alert?
Toggle More InfoOnce submitted, Student Success Advocates review the alert, coordinate referrals to appropriate campus partners, and support the student through outreach and follow-up. Actions and outcomes are documented in Wings Up to ensure continuity of care.
-
Does submitting an Early Alert replace academic advising or classroom conversations?
Toggle More InfoNo. Early Alerts are designed to complement, not replace, faculty engagement or academic advising. Faculty should continue to communicate directly with students about course expectations, performance, and progress, and advisors should continue to provide academic planning, registration guidance, and degree support.
Early Alerts add an additional layer of coordination by ensuring concerns are visible beyond the classroom and advising appointment. By submitting an alert, faculty help Student Success Advocates connect students to the appropriate advising, academic support, or campus resources and ensure follow-up occurs—especially when a student may not proactively seek help.
This shared approach strengthens communication across faculty, advisors, and support teams while keeping students at the center of the process.
-
Will the student know I submitted an Early Alert?
Toggle More InfoStudents are contacted in a supportive manner focused on available resources and next steps. The intent is to provide help, not to assign blame or escalate discipline.
-
Does submitting an Early Alert impact grading or academic standing?

-
How much time does it take to submit an Early Alert?
Toggle More InfoSubmitting an Early Alert is designed to be quick and efficient. Most alerts can be completed in just a few minutes within Wings Up.
-
Can I submit more than one Early Alert for the same student?

Student Success Advocates serve as the central point of coordination and can document new information, adjust outreach, and ensure support remains responsive without creating duplicate alerts.
