Works from the permanent collection are on display on the third floor of the Wilson G. Bradshaw Library, behind University Archives & Special Collections. This selection features a variety of works, as well as a focus on artist and professor emeritus of printmaking (Marshall University), Peter Massing, born 1956 in Buffalo, New York. With a natural acuity for draftsmanship, Massing's drawing transitions intuitively into the various methods associated with lithography and intaglio printmaking. With print, the results can be replicated allowing for multiples of the same image, or unique and integrate varied printing processes to create hybrid prints where the drawing or key image has the ability to change radically.

Massing’s prints show a penchant for detail and a devotion to the draftsman’s art. He says, “I focus on printmaking, and it’s a pleasure, because I like to draw.” Words matter, too. “Words evoke images,” he explains. “Even if they don’t make sense.” His artworks are visual sonnets: compact, carefully composed and bearing many nuances.

Opening Reception and Artist Talk (in conjunction with Reflections in Clay), Thursday, October 8, 2026, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Between Creation & Concrete is a collaborative window installation that merges natural imagery with organic, playful motifs. Inspired by forms found throughout Florida’s ecosystems, the work uses freehand drawing and vinyl to evoke themes of connection, growth, and coexistence. The project grows out of an ongoing effort to develop innovative, bird-safe window solutions at FGCU.

Breah Fyffe (‘22 Art) is an FGCU alumna and Art Assistant at Moorings Park, where she leads projects for a diverse community of learners. Her practice spans painting, drawing, ceramics, and printmaking, informed by a broader engagement with music, martial arts, and gardening. 

Marcela Pulgarin (‘22 Art) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Southwest Florida and an FGCU alumna. Her work explores the relationship between material and self through interpretations of natural forms, using line, pattern, and subtle variation to create tactile, contemplative compositions.

Outdoor Mural Project

Opening Reception with the Artist, Thursday, October 16, 2025, 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Farrah Alkhadra (’21, Art) creates two mixed media murals for display at the end of the Arts Complex Courtyard. This is the third year that alumni from the program have been commissioned to create public pieces as part of this project.

The murals include bright, saturated colors and geometric components projecting from the surface. The pieces are a continuation of her Senior Project investigations that were inspired by forms, materials, and color theory. Working primarily as a 3D sculptor, Alkhadra combines her signature steel forms with mixed media installation for this project.

Chloe Lewis ('18, Art) and Isabella Baquerizo (’19, Art) present Girl Feast as a celebration of friendship, joy, and the experience of girlhood. Through an abundance mindset, sharing, and play this exhibition creates a space where connection and belonging are central to everyday life. The works explore inner worlds and shared experiences, reflecting on how communal moments—especially around food and play—bring people together. The artists encourage us to romanticize the ordinary, and to see the world with an open heart. 

Through immersive installations and vibrant artworks, Girl Feast offers a lens into a worldview where joy and togetherness create a sense of wholeness. Girl Feast invites visitors to take a seat at the table, reflect on connection, and engage with the idea that community is built through the smallest, most meaningful exchanges.

This exhibition is part of the FGCU Art Galleries’ Alumni Series.

Outdoor Mural Project

October 17, 2025-September 30, 2026

Farrah Alkhadra (’21, Art) creates two mixed media murals for display at the end of the Arts Complex Courtyard. This is the third year that alumni from the program have been commissioned to create public pieces as part of this project.

The murals include bright, saturated colors and geometric components projecting from the surface. The pieces are a continuation of her Senior Project investigations that were inspired by forms, materials, and color theory. Working primarily as a 3D sculptor, Alkhadra combines her signature steel forms with mixed media installation for this project.

On Monday, November 3, the FGCU Art Program and Art Galleries will host Beloved: Remembering Andy Owen, a celebration of printmaking, poetry, and community. The event runs from 4 to 7 p.m., opening with a display of works by Andy Owen in the Printmaking Studio (Arts Complex room 148) for sale to benefit Nuch Owen. This event also presents the release of a new book published by the FGCU Art Galleries, Ghost Horizons: Chanda Jamieson and Andy Owen, which will be given away free at the event.  At 4:30pm, a courtyard reception begins, leading into a presentation honoring Andy Owen’s legacy with poet Chanda Jamieson and writer Jennifer Reed. At 5:30, visitors will gather for a steamroller printmaking demonstration, followed by public participation in the printing process from 5:50 to 6:45 p.m. At 6 p.m., a viewing of the prints FGCU art students created as part of a printmaking exchange introduced by Andy Owen. The viewing will take place in the Drawing or Painting Studio (final location to be announced). The day promises to honor Andy Owen’s enduring influence while bringing together the community in the shared spirit of creativity and remembrance.

Public murals have exploded in popularity in the last 50 years. In Ramiro Davaro-Comas’ lecture, The Importance of Community‑Based Public Art, he will trace that evolution for his personal work and process and share how collaboration can transform both artwork and audience.

Ramiro Davaro-Comas is an Argentine/American artist with a background in public art and artist residency management. Davaro-Comas is a graduate of the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, a Americorps VISTA Alumni and a recipient of the Leadership in Arts Management certificate from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Davaro-Comas has participated in artist residency programs around the world and has painted over 300 murals and managed another 150 mural installations for other artists. He was the director of the Art Students League residency program and Dripped on the Road.

Currently, he co-directs Super-Stories with Grace Lang, focuses on arts education and large-scale mural projects. Super-Stories centers the students and community members in every aspect of the work. He has painted 40 murals in the past 3 years with over 10,000 students, community members and teachers. Davaro-Comas consults on public art projects, paints private commissioned murals, and exhibits his work in galleries.

Ramiro Davaro-Comas, this season's Fjelstul lecturer, has worked with students from the Art Program to create murals in the Arts Complex Courtyard. The official unveiling of the new public art will occur on Friday, November 14 at 4:00 pm with a reception.

The Rawlins Chamber Ensemble, featuring the expressive combination of cello and piano, will present a captivating program that blends timeless classical works with innovative contemporary compositions. This concert will showcase the extreme dynamics within British composer Benjamin Britten’s Cello Sonata, a powerful and emotionally rich work brimming with intricate dialogue between the cello and piano. Written in 1961, the Cello Sonata offers sweeping lyrical moments alongside strikingly dissonant passages, embodying both fragility and strength. The program takes a bold turn with Astor Piazzolla’s Le Grand Tango, a sultry and dramatic work that brings the passion of the Argentine tango into the concert hall. Piazzolla’s fusion of traditional tango rhythms with contemporary harmonies creates a thrilling, pulsating energy that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats. Following that, Carlos Simon’s Lickety Split will infuse the evening with a lively, rhythmic energy. A recent and innovative piece by one of the most prominent voices in American contemporary music, Lickety Split blends jazz, funk, and classical influences into a high-energy ride, showcasing Simon's mastery of rhythm and texture. To conclude the evening, the ensemble will perform Margaret Hubicki’s Two Contrasting Pieces, a contemporary work that explores the interplay between two distinct musical characters—one introspective and lyrical, the other sharp and percussive. This piece provides a fascinating contrast to the earlier works, offering an opportunity for both performers to display their versatility and depth of expression. Together, these pieces create a rich and diverse program that promises to engage audiences with both familiarity and discovery, celebrating the unique voice of the cello and piano duo in an unforgettable musical journey.

The FGCU Art Galleries is partnering with Art and Language and Literature, to create a hybrid visual art and creative writing site-specific outdoor public exhibition. Under the guidance of their professors, this exhibition features the coursework of FGCU students from Introduction to Nature Writing and Art and Community Engagement.  

As the arts become increasingly integrated throughout campus, these cross curricular efforts promote increased collaboration between diverse students. The end result of the project is a large-scale multi panel mural on display in the highly visible walkway between the Cohen Student Union & Sugden Hall leading the way to Parking Garage 1.

In this exhibition, we embark on a temporal journey, speculating about the people, places, and times of the 1850s to the present. Born before the end of US enslavement, Shabaka’s paternal grandfather and other family members migrated to St. Lucie County around 1920. They carried with them tales of lives filled with hope, redemption, and reconciliation.

Onajide Shabaka’s artistic endeavors are deeply influenced by a fusion of historical and biographical content, particularly drawing inspiration from the southern United States population comprising African and Native American descent. Additionally, his practice incorporates elements reminiscent of Florida’s unique ecology, which holds profound significance in relation to the history of medicinal plants and folk healing practices.

She has recently been featured as an artist with the Grammy award-winning Boston Early Music Festival, Boston Baroque, the Henry Purcell Society of Boston, Emmanuel Music, Boston Opera Collaborative, and Mass Opera. She serves as Assistant Professor of Voice and Vocal Pedagogy at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee and Artist-Teacher of Voice at the Longy School of Music of Bard College.

Experience an unforgettable evening of artistry and elegance as historical flutist David Ross joins forces with pianist Michael Baron for a captivating concert of music for unaccompanied flute, and music for flute and piano. David Ross is a renowned historical flutist based in New York City whose career centers on performing with flutes from the Baroque, Classical, and early Romantic periods — instruments that preceded the modern silver flute in both design and sound. Ross studied baroque flute with Wilbert Hazelzet at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague, earning a Bachelor’s in Early Music, and later completed a Master’s in Historical Performance at The Juilliard School.
