What is SURIS?

SURIS is a celebration of our undergraduate students' hard work and accomplishments. We welcome the FGCU faculty, staff, and students, along with various community members and partners, to engage with the research, internships, and service-learning projects being done at FGCU.

SURIS provides students with the experience of presenting their projects to an audience outside of the classroom, a way to showcase their achievements to the community, and an opportunity to connect with the FGCU and surrounding community. SURIS is also used to evaluate various department programs, to fulfill a program presentation requirement, or to fulfill a class presentation requirement.

What are the expectations?

SURIS is a celebration, not a competition. There is no judging, no awards, and no cost to register! Posters line the academic corridor from 3:00-5:00PM.

The day is split into two sessions. Session A consists of odd numbered posters presenting from 3:00-4:00PM, and Session B consists of even numbered posters presenting from 4:00-5:00PM.

During your session, you will stand next to your poster ready to explain your research and answer questions from visitors. During the other session, it's your turn to see what your classmates have accomplished! Leave your poster up for others to view while you walk the corridor, ask other presenters questions, and socialize!

Dress to impress - the University President and Provost as well as community members are invited to attend.

Food and drinks will be provided.

How do I register?

The registration link will be posted under Upcoming Event Details when open. Registration opens in September.

When will I know if I'm accepted?

Everyone that registers is automatically accepted. After registering, the first author, first mentor, and first community partner listed in the registration will receive a confirmation email with your registration information, as well as follow-up emails with further information.

How do I print my poster?

Each department prints their own posters. Reach out to your faculty mentor for further information on poster printing.

How do I check-in for SURIS?

Check-in starts at 2:15PM outside of Whitaker Hall. A map noting the check-in desk will be sent out via email before the event, will be included in the program, and will be posted around the academic corridor. The check-in desk will mark your attendance, provide you with a name tag, and direct you to your poster location.

Projects involving human subjects are required to undergo Institutional Review Board (IRB) review. The IRB ensures that the rights, safety and welfare of human subjects are protected as mandated by the appropriate federal regulations, state statutes and university guidelines. Research with human subjects may not be conducted prior to receiving IRB approval and any results, photos, or data should be anonymized. More information on IRB approval can be found at fgcu.edu/academic/research/IRB.

Projects involving animals are required to undergo Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) review. The IACUC ensures that use or possible impact on animals comply with federal regulations. More information on IACUC approval can be found at fgcu.edu/academics/research/IACUC.

Projects involving activities, supplies, or materials in a risk category are required to undergo Institutional Safety Committee (ISC) review. The ISC promotes and facilitates a safe campus environment by ensuring all projects comply with Federal, state, local, and University regulations. Risk categories include hazardous waste, human products, live animals, animal carcasses, or animal products, toxic compound producing organisms, viral vectors, recombinant or synthetic DNA.RNA, pathogenic microorganisms, select agents or toxins, environmental samples, chemicals and/or reagents, gases, nanoparticles or nanochemistry, radioactive materials or instruments, high magnetic field technology, laser or LIDAR technology, ground penetrating radar, drones/robots, scientific diving, and activities conducted by a minor who is not an FGCU student. More information on ISC approval can be found at fgcu.edu/ehs/institutional-safety-committee.
