AI Academy educates learners across all levels

This fall, the Dendritic: A Human-Centered AI and Data Science Institute, housed within the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering, launched the FGCU AI Academy. The academy contains a comprehensive set of programs for students, faculty and staff to build AI literacy, professional development and applied skills. This is part of a multi-year initiative that focuses on responsible, ethical and the practical use of AI to enhance how we teach, learn, research and work together.

“Building AI literacy ensures that FGCU remains a leader in human-centered innovation and prepares our community for the opportunities of the AI era,” said Dr. Leandro de Castro, director of the institute. 

To support this effort, the academy’s course catalog is designed to meet learners at every level. Courses range from AI literacy and data analysis to machine learning and developing scalable startups. Registration for the first cohort is now open. 

Courses include: 

• AI Literacy: A basic-level course that equips learners with enough understanding to confidently use and critically evaluate AI tools.
• AI Ethics and Society: A basic-level course that helps develop critical thinking around the social, ethical and responsible use of AI.
• AI Productivity Tools: An intermediate-level course that empowers learners with the practical skills to strategically integrate AI tools into their work to boost productivity and efficiency. 

“Start small, stay curious and do not be intimidated,” said de Castro. “You do not have to be a programmer to use the new AI tools effectively. They are here to amplify your expertise, not replace it.” 

The AI Academy empowers employees to embrace curiosity by exploring AI, asking bold questions and applying it in creative, meaningful ways.
