New podcast gives adjunct faculty a voice

November 03, 2025

The Adjunct Files” is a new podcast hosted by John Roth, adjunct faculty coordinator with the Lucas Center for Faculty Development and Maggie Hohne, first-year seminar coordinator. The goal of the podcast is to fill a critical gap for the 430 active adjunct faculty at FGCU and thousands of others across the nation.

Adjunct faculty often want to engage in professional development but face time constraints. Workshops and trainings are scheduled during daytime hours, when adjuncts are typically off campus or working elsewhere. The podcast offers adjuncts flexible, on-demand access to professional development, and it complements existing resources from the Lucas Center and Digital Learning.

Episodes feature adjuncts sharing their experiences, as well as staff and administrators highlighting resources and support systems. Recent episodes include:

  • “I Just Got Assigned a New Course. Now What?”
  • “Meet the Pres.”
  • “The Adjunct Experience”
  • “Gen Z in College”
  • “AI for All”
  •  “The Skills Advantage”

“Adjuncts are sometimes referred to as the ‘invisible faculty’,” said Roth.

“Many feel disconnected from the university community, excluded from departmental communications or meetings, and lack a sense of belonging.”

Three people are in a room with acoustic wall panels. They are wearing headphones and are sitting at an inverted, L-shaped wooden table. The table has audio recording equipment and a computer monitor on top. The person on the left is wearing a green blouse, the person in the middle is wearing a light blue shirt, and the person on the right is wearing a matching beige blazer and skirt.

Maggie Hohne, John Roth and President Aysegul Timur discuss adjunct faculty support, the president’s time at FGCU, her career journey, lessons learned and more.

The podcast aims to bridge the gaps between connection, recognition and support. “It gives adjuncts a voice, affirms their value and helps them feel seen and respected,” added Roth. He believes that when adjunct faculty are empowered and included, student success and engagement naturally follow.
