Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (B.S.N. to D.N.P.)
The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is educated to provide longitudinal, comprehensive services necessary for the prevention and treatment of mental health problems and psychiatric disorders. PMHNPs are prepared to conduct individual and group psychotherapy and prescribe and manage psychopharmacological treatments in collaboration with the patient that enhance mental health and optimal functioning.
The PMHNP curriculum prepares graduates to provide care to individuals across the lifespan and all levels of severity for families, groups and communities who are at risk for or experiencing mental health problems.
The PMHNP curriculum emphasizes holistic, trauma-informed care and is grounded in the principles of resilience and healing. Self-awareness and the therapeutic relationship are foundational for ethical PMHNP practice (NONPF, 2024).
