January 30, 2026: Awareness: Prepare for Below-Freezing Temperatures
Toggle More InfoGood afternoon,
FGCU Emergency Management is monitoring a significant Arctic cold blast expected to impact Southwest Florida this weekend, with the harshest impacts to be felt Saturday evening into Monday morning. Widespread below-freezing temperatures are expected, with “feels-like” temperatures (wind chill) likely to drop the air temperature to the 20s or upper teens on Sunday morning.
While there are no changes in campus operations, we want to make sure our students and employees are planning ahead for the complex range of hazards the Arctic front could cause, including freeze conditions, icy surfaces and an increased risk of fire or infrastructure impacts.
Advance awareness and simple preventive steps will reduce the chance of avoidable incidents. Consider the best practices outlined in the following graphic or visit weather.gov/wrn/winter-storms-sm.
You can also sign up for emergency notifications in the county you reside in:
- Charlotte County: Alert Charlotte
- Collier County: Alert Collier
- Glades County: AlertGlades

- Plug heaters directly into wall outlets (do not use extension cords or power strips)
- Turn heaters off when unattended
Stay warm and stay safe, Eagles!

July 31, 2025: Power Outage in Ben Hill Griffin and Howard Halls
Toggle More InfoGood morning,
FGCU is working with Florida Power & Light to address a power outage impacting Ben Hill Griffin and Howard halls. The outage has impacted FGCU’s Data Center, causing the campus-wide network failure earlier today.
A backup generator has enabled access to some of our network, but a full restoration may take time. We do not have an estimate on when power will be fully restored, and FGCU is moving affected classes to alternate locations on campus.
Instructors who are scheduled to teach today in Ben Hill Griffin Hall are being notified of a change of location for their class. They are expected to notify their students via their Canvas courses of where the class will meet today.
Employees in the affected buildings can consider working in other facilities on campus or speak with a supervisor on other remote work options.
FGCU anticipates normal operations on campus Friday, August 1. However, we will share updates if that changes.
Please send questions about this email to FGCUupdate@fgcu.edu. The FGCU Update email account is operated by University Communications & Media Relations, in coordination with FGCU Emergency Management.

July 28, 2025: Test Of FGCU Emergency Notification Systems August 4
Toggle More InfoGood afternoon,
FGCU Emergency Management and the University Police Department are testing the university’s emergency notification systems from 8:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. on Monday, August 4. This test is intentionally taking place while faculty, staff and students are on campus to spread awareness of what emergency alerts look and sound like should a real-life emergency occur on campus.
Starting at 8:45 a.m., FGCU will initiate a lockdown test to evaluate the locking mechanisms on all electrified doors to buildings across campus, making them inaccessible from the outside. To ensure you make it into your building before the lockdown drill begins, please review all of the information in this email.
There will be two phases to the alert testing process:
Phase 1: From 8:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., FGCU will test all alert and notification tools, including:
- RAVE Guardian Eagle App Alert: Text messages sent to mobile phone numbers on file at the university as well as messages sent to the Guardian Eagle App inbox. Prior to the test, make sure you update your current cell phone numbers in Workday (employees) and through the Office of the Registrar (students).
- FGCU websites: A red alert banner will appear on all FGCU websites.
- LYNXIconPro: A pop-up emergency notification on office and podium computers (Note: there is a small "x" in the upper, right-hand corner of the pop-up box so you can dismiss the message).
- Social media: Alert notifications will appear on the official, branded university Facebook and X (Twitter) pages, as well as those managed by the University Police Department and Emergency Management.
- Outdoor sirens: Outdoor sirens will be activated, sounding for 30 seconds.
- Screen Cloud: The alert message will appear in FGCU shuttle buses and on screens with the application.
Phase 2: From 8:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., FGCU will test the locking mechanisms on all electrified doors.
- Students and employees will not be able to enter buildings during this testing window.
- Students and employees should plan their arrival times to campus with the testing
window in mind. Classes are not in session on this date, and employees should consider
virtual meetings instead of in-person meetings during this time period.
Throughout the emergency notification systems test, all alerts will clearly indicate that this is a test and that there is no real emergency on campus. We will notify the campus community when the test is complete, and we encourage you to carry on with normal operations as possible.
The safety of our students and employees is of the upmost importance to FGCU, and we thank you in advance for your cooperation.
