TITLE: Comparing Advertisements in Different Countries & Creating Logos for A Global Audience

Project Description:

In an increasingly interconnected world, designers must create visual identities that transcend global boundaries while maintaining local relevance. This project challenges you to develop a logo system that is both deeply meaningful within specific communities and adaptable across different global audiences.

Through collaboration across countries with design students in Ecuador, students engaged in a research-driven design process emphasizing global understandings, strategic thinking, and professional communication. You'll employ design thinking methodologies to research, ideate, prototype, and refine solutions that are grounded in a country’s standards and priorities yet globally versatile.

The students’ task mirrored real-world scenarios where designers balance local authenticity with international scalability — a critical skill in today's global marketplace. Students practiced collaborative problem-solving across countries, developed research-based design strategies, and created a visual identity that demonstrated your ability to design with global intelligence and professional rigor.

Student Learning Outcomes:

This project aimed to spark students' interest in design collaboration across countries and encourage meaningful dialogue with international peers, thereby enhancing their critical thinking, globally relevant communication skills, and global design perspective. The COIL project aimed to develop students' global awareness and foster their appreciation for research-driven, globally sensitive design practice. Through the COIL project, students were expected to:

  • Develop dialogue with Ecuadorian design peers and work collaboratively on a visual identity project that bridges countries’ contexts.
  • Identify differences and similarities between American and Ecuadorian design approaches, visual languages, and symbolic systems.
  • Demonstrate enhancement of their communication competence across countries and languages through professional collaboration across time zones and global perspectives.
  • Develop and demonstrate an appreciation and better understanding of how design thinking methods apply to global branding challenges.
  • Gain a broader perspective on the world while enhancing their self-awareness and understanding of their own design assumptions.
