Works from the Permanent Collection by Herb Jackson are on display in the new Gallery
101 space. This selection features a variety of vitreographs by painter and printmaker
Herb Jackson, born in 1945 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Beginning to draw and exhibit
at an early age, Jackson won his first juried exhibition at the North Carolina Museum
of Art when he was in high school. However, it was only after receiving his B.A. in
German from Davidson College in 1967 that he pursued formal art studies, to which
he later received his MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in
1970. Jackson’s work focuses on processes that reveal multilayered textures, marks
and intense colors. He credits the inspiration within his work to his subconscious,
his travels, and to nature, where he spends time exploring the woods and creeks and
digging in the earth near his childhood home.
