Works from the Permanent Collection will be displayed on the third floor of the Wilson G. Bradshaw Library, behind University Archives & Special Collections. This selection features a variety of works, as well as a focus on artist and devoted educator Mildred Thompson (1936-2003), born in Jacksonville, Florida.
Thompson’s work spanned over four decades and multiple genres within the fine arts. During her career she chose freedom of exploration and defying norms where she made significant contributions to the fields of creative writing and journalism, filmmaking, music, and digital media. In the early 1970s, Thompson began to strictly work in abstract form. Her practice transcended ever-changing art world trends and prevailing narratives prescribed by her social and biological categorizations. Personal visual language inspired by theories and systems of science and music, Thompson sought to interpret and visualize elements and experiences invisible to the naked eye, with a particular affinity for the subjects of time, space, and sound.
This exhibition space rotates each semester to highlight different artists, themes, and art styles housed within the FGCU Art Galleries’ Permanent Collection.
