Road Trip: It’s the Journal, Not the Destination is a collaborative exhibition by FGCU alumna Donne Hutcheson (‘18, Art) and writer Monica Sloan. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but words and images together create a more colorful, intellectual, and emotional experience than either alone.

In this exhibition, Hutcheson and Sloan present their shared reflections on a journey from Florida to North Carolina and back again. What might have been the vacation slideshow no one wants to see is reimagined through colored pencil and poetry as a dynamic duet.

Inspired in part by Ghost Horizons, a collaboration between poet Chanda Jamieson and FGCU professor Andy Owen, the artists merge their individual perspectives into a single creative exchange. Hutcheson’s images shaped Sloan’s poetry, and Sloan’s words shaped Hutcheson’s images. Though they traveled individually, their ideas converged to create Road Trip.

Sponsored by the FGCU Alumni Association, Gene and Lee Seidler, the Wasmer Endowment, and WGCU Public Media.
