STEM Ethics Conference 2025
Saturday, 26th April 2025, 9:00 AM - 4 PM FGCU Water School
The STEM Ethics Conference is a free event to educate STEM professionals, students, educators, and volunteers about basic ethics surrounding STEM activities, research, competition rules, and where to find resources. The conference is funded by the National Science Foundation and hosted at FGCU.

The conference is FREE for all attendees, and registration is required. All interested students, K-12 teachers, faculty, researchers, volunteers, and other professionals working in STEM are invited to attend. Free breaks and lunch are provided. Please register by April 20th.

PRESENTER BIOS
Sherry Alexander, MSOD is the Assistant Director of Research and Research Integrity Officer at FGCU. She is also the research compliance officer for IRB and IACUC, and the Export Control Officer. Sherry is a certified Export Compliance Professional, specifically in Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). She has been in research compliance for 10 years, six years at FGCU and four years at Wichita State University.
Logan Crawford, BA is an Environmental Scientist for a federal contractor. He earned his BA in Environmental Studies from Florida Gulf Coast University and has years of experience in providing environmental health and safety services to a host of variable industries, including, but not limited to pharmaceutical companies, hazardous waste management and support, and higher education. His philosophy is that, regardless of the industry to which services are provided, safety and security are always paramount.
Sherri Emer, PhD is an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Florida Gulf Coast University, where she serves as the Chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. She also serves as Councilor-at-Large and Chair of the Grants-in-Aid of Undergraduate Research Program with the Florida Academy of Sciences. Dr. Emer earned a PhD in Cell & Molecular Biology from the Florida institute of Technology and MS in Neuroscience & Behavior from Georgia State University. Her research focuses on sensory neurobiology and the effects of microgravity. She is a PI on NSF ER2 and co-PI FDEP Innovative Technology grants, and PI on a Florida Space Grant Consortium Senior Design project.
Laura Frost, PhD is Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Chemistry at FGCU. Her more recent research interests include STEM accessibility and belonging and evidence-based inclusive teaching practices. She has received several grants from the National Science Foundation over the years that have supported this work, most recently as a co-PI on an NSF ADVANCE Catalyst grant: Reveal, Amplify, Implement Strategies for Equity (RAISE) awarded to FGCU in 2023.
Kim James, PhD is an Assistant Professor at Florida Gulf Coast University, the current President of the Florida Branch of the American Society of Microbiology, and the Vice chair of FGCU's Institutional Safety Committee. Her research interests have evolved into understanding the physiology and virulence potential of Staphylococcus aureus during fermentative and anaerobic growth.
Bethlyn Katz, PA-C is originally from Long Island, New York. Her passion for sports medicine began while earning her Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training. After working as a certified athletic trainer for two years with an NCAA Division I Sports Program on Long Island, she pursued a degree in physician assistant studies from Hofstra University. As a board-certified physician assistant, Mrs. Katz practiced orthopedic surgery for seven years under a sports medicine fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon, specializing in shoulder, knee, and hip arthroscopy, as well as musculoskeletal ultrasound. She joined the Medical Education Sports and Arthroplasty team in 2017. She soon moved to take a leading role in providing education for the Orthobiologics product line. In 2022, Mrs. Katz transitioned over to the Clinical Advisory Division as a Principal Clinical Advisory Specialist.
Andrew Palmer, PhD is an Associate Professor and Associate Department Head and Program Chair of Marine & Environmental Science, Oceanography, and Meteorology at Florida Institute of Technology. He earned a PhD in Biological Chemistry from Emory University and a BS in Biochemistry from Florida State University. His research focuses on sustainable space agriculture systems that use resources at colony sites beyond Earth. He also serves annually as a judge at the International Science and Engineering Fair.
Starlette Sinclair, PhD is a cognitive aging psychologist, full time faculty member, and co-chair of FGCU’s Institutional Review Board (IRB). She is also co-PI on an NSF ADVANCE Catalyst funded project: Reveal, Amplify, Implement Strategies for Equity (RAISE).
Arie van Duijn, PT, MScPT, EdD is a Professor of Physical Therapy at the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Florida Gulf Coast University. He has a BS in PT from the Academie voor Fysiotherapie in Leiden, The Netherlands, a MScPT from the University of St. Augustine, and an EdD from the University of Central Florida. His current area of scholarship and teaching includes orthopedic physical therapy with a special interest in manual therapy of the spine and the extremities, musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging, and motion analysis. He authored the textbook Manual Therapy for the Extremities and presents and publishes regularly in his areas of scholarship.
