Hazardous Materials Management

A hazardous material is any item or agent (biological, chemical, radiological, and/or physical), which has the potential to cause harm to humans, animals, or the environment, either by itself or through interaction with other factors, as defined by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management.

Hazardous materials are defined and regulated in the United States primarily by laws and regulations administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a list in 40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 355, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in 29 CFR 1910.1200, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) in 49 CFR 100-199, and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 10 CFR 20. Each has its own definition of a "hazardous material."

What is a chemical? EH&S defers to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), 15 U.S.C. §2601 et seq., for the definition and inventory of chemical substances.
