Reporting incidents that affect campus operations

November 04, 2026

FGCU’s Emergency Management department supports the university’s ability to prepare for, respond to, recover from and reduce the impacts of incidents, emergencies and disasters on campus.

Knowing who to contact and when can help minimize disruptions and support a coordinated response. When an emergency occurs, contact the University Police Department (UPD) at 239-590- 1900. For incidents that may affect campus operations, notify Emergency Management as soon as possible. Emergency Management may simply monitor conditions, receive notifications or coordinate resources as needed.

Examples of incidents that should be reported to Emergency Management include:

• power outages

• storm damage

• water leaks

• minor flooding

• HVAC issue that may lead to a change in operations or hazardous air flow

• a fire incident with cascading incidents

• gas leaks

• building evacuations

• illness outbreaks

• events disrupting athletic or campus events

• technology outages

• temporary closure of a facility

Emergency Management also works closely with campus partners to develop emergency plans, continuity strategies, training programs and response protocols. It coordinates resources, conducts after-action reviews and identifies improvements that can make FGCU even more resilient for the future.

“Building a safe, prepared and resilient campus is a shared responsibility among all students, faculty and staff,” said Diania Tsenekos, director of Emergency Management. “Emergencies can happen without warning. Stay informed, pay attention to emergency alerts, participate in training and follow official university guidance.”

Beyond responding to incidents, Emergency Management collaborates with UPD to test FGCU’s emergency alerts systems and verify it can successfully deliver notifications to students and employees during a real emergency.

To further enhance campus preparedness, Emergency Management provides year-round training, including hurricane training and information sessions on FGCU’s Emergency Response Guide.
