Enhancing the Career Readiness Experience for Students

The Skills Advantage is a project to help FGCU undergraduates turn their transferable skills into success after graduation.

What are transferable skills? They are general skills like communication, critical thinking, or teamwork. We call them “transferable” because they are an important part of most jobs, and because they are taught across the college curriculum, not just in one major.

Surveys show that many employers value these general skills as much as – and sometimes more than – the specialized knowledge you learn in your major:

FGCU Transferable Skill Badges are a free tool to help you get recognition for your general skills and learn how to talk about employers about your skill set. We currently offer nine different badges. You may get started on a badge through a course assignment, or you can click below to register for a badge on your own.

Each FGCU Transferable Skill Badge is made up of a Portfolio plus an Interview.

Some FGCU faculty will have you start a badge as part of a course assignment; but you can also register and get started on a badge on your own

When you register for a badge, you’ll be invited to a badge Canvas course with detailed instructions for what you need to do next. Click above to register!

Connect with the FGCU Navigators to help you complete your badge!

The Navigators will help you review your other completed courses, campus involvement and other activities to help you complete your portfolio and prep for your interview.
I completed my badge, now what?

- After you complete both the Portfolio & Interview phases of the digital badge, you will be provided with instructions on how to access the link for your digital badge. These badges can then be uploaded onto sites like LinkedIn. Each digital badge will contain metadata with information regarding the rigor of the badge for your future employers to appreciate.
- According to LinkedIn, people with micro-credentials are 65% more findable by employers and head-hunters.
- Students who complete their transferable skills digital badges prior to graduation will be provided with a special stole and badges for commencement.
