Scholarships

FGCU students pursuing an academic program of study abroad are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.

Application deadlines:

Students traveling for Spring programs: October 13, 2023

Students traveling for Summer/Fall programs: February 16, 2024

Award Amount:

Up to $1500 USD for students participating on an FGCU Faculty Led Study Abroad program or an FGCU partner university exchange program OR up to $3000 for students participating on an independent program of 4 weeks or more with a direct enroll institution or education abroad organization.

• Qualified candidates will be currently enrolled full or part time degree seeking undergraduate students with financial need whose study abroad program or courses will apply toward degree completion.
• Scholarships will be awarded to students who desire to participate in a study abroad program sponsored by Florida Gulf Coast University or another Florida Gulf Coast University approved third party education abroad organization.
• Qualified candidates will be enrolled in FGCU courses as part of their program or approved for the transfer of academic credits from the host institution abroad toward the student’s FGCU transcript.
• Qualified candidates will be in good academic standing and hold a cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or higher. Reasonable exceptions may be considered at the discretion of the committee.
• Qualified candidates must be admitted to or applying for, via the FGCU Global Engagement Office, a study abroad program before applying for this scholarship.
• Applicants are encouraged to have a FAFSA application on file.
• Award recipients will also need to complete a separate foundation application.

Instructions and Criteria of Eligibility

1. Applicants must have at least one full semester of FGCU coursework to complete toward degree study following completion of the study abroad experience.
2. Complete the application in full (including essay and program costs as noted below). Applicants must demonstrate the maturity needed to benefit from their experience abroad, and they should be able to describe the expected outcome of their program participation towards their future academic and career objectives. A successful applicant will demonstrate a coherent link between their proposed program abroad activities and their future academic and/or career plans, as well as personal development goals.
3. Scholarship recipients must demonstrate community service as required by FGCU. Student involvement in leadership, campus or community activities is desirable.
4. The top scholarship applicants and or recipients may be interviewed by members Perez Family Study Abroad Scholarship selection committee.
5. Scholarship recipients should be willing to make a presentation or partake in other forms of outreach to communicate his/her experience abroad to FGCU students.
6. FGCU International Services and scholarship selection committee reserves the right to determine award recipients and amounts.

This award will be reported to FGCU Financial Aid Office and may impact the student’s overall financial aid profile. If you withdraw from a program for any reason (voluntary or involuntary), any award you may have received may be revoked. If your award is revoked after funds have been disbursed to you, you will be responsible for returning any outstanding or prorated award amount.

APPLY

FGCU students pursuing an academic program of study in Scotland for semester or summer programs are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.  

• Qualified candidates will be full or part time degree seeking undergraduate students whose study abroad program or courses will apply toward degree completion.
• Recipients must currently have and maintain a minimum 2.8 GPA;
• Recipients must demonstrate community service as required by FGCU. Student involvement in leadership, campus or community activities is beneficial;
• Recipients must already either be admitted to or applying for, through FGCU International Services, a study abroad program in a school in Scotland before applying for this scholarship.
• Application deadline:  Oct. 30^th for Spring study abroad programs and March 30th for summer and fall programs  
• Award Amount:  up to $6000.00 USD for semester programs and $4000 for summer programs

Application and Instructions

Honors Development Funds (HDF) support Honors students’ intellectual development by providing up to $2,000 to offset costs for Study Abroad or Study Away opportunities

The Global Learning Grant Program provides up to $500.00 per semester to pay for tuition and fees for undergrad students in programs affiliated with the Global Engagement Office, provided they meet the eligibility requirements. The award is to be used in the semester indicated in the application and may not be deferred for future use. The award is intended for those students who demonstrate engagement/involvement in campus internationalization programs and events (active participation in the Millennium Fellowship, GEO Ambassador Program, International Education Week, International Reception, Study Abroad Fair, International Peace Day, International Friends Cafe, Salseros, DROP, etc.). Students with demonstrated greater engagement in FGCU campus internationalization endeavors or cross-cultural programs/events will receive preference in the awarding and dispersal of this grant.

International Students:

• Applicants must be on F-1, F-2 or H1-B visas. Short-term, exchange students on J-1 visas are not eligible.
• Must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing in an undergraduate degree program at Florida Gulf Coast University. 
• If chosen, you will need to have completed two semesters at FGCU with satisfactory academic progress (SAP) prior to the use of the award.

Domestic Students:

• If chosen, you will need to provide evidence that you have enrolled in an FGCU sponsored Faculty Led Study Abroad Program or that you have been enrolled in an FGCU sponsored exchange program, or have participated in campus internationalization programs and events (active participation in the Millennium Fellowship, GEO Ambassador Program, International Education Week, International Reception, Study Abroad Fair, International Peace Day, International Friends Cafe, Salseros, DROP, etc.).
• Must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing in an undergraduate degree program at Florida Gulf Coast University.
• If chosen, you will need to have completed two semesters at FGCU with satisfactory academic progress (SAP) prior to the use of the award.

FGCU students pursuing an academic program of study abroad are encouraged to apply for this grant.  CAS students and others pursuing experiential learning opportunities that include a rigorous field-based component, directed research or service learning are strongly encouraged to apply.

Award Amount:

Up to $4000 USD for students participating on an FGCU Faculty Led Study Abroad program or another FGCU approved study abroad program with a direct enroll institution or education abroad organization.

• Qualified candidates will be currently enrolled full or part time degree seeking undergraduate students whose study abroad program or courses will apply toward degree completion.
• Grants will be awarded to students who desire to participate in a study abroad program sponsored by Florida Gulf Coast University or another Florida Gulf Coast University approved education abroad organization. 
• Qualified candidates will be in good academic standing and hold a cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or higher.

Applicant must be admitted to or applying for a study abroad program before applying for this scholarship and information must be on file with the FGCU Study Abroad Office

• Applicants are encouraged to have a FAFSA application on file.
