Summer 2019 Boot Camp
This summer program is available to all incoming freshman science majors who enroll in General Biology I or General Biology II during their freshman year. These courses have a reputation for being extremely challenging and difficult for students to pass. In 2014 FGCU began offering the BIOS Boot Camp to give students a head start in the classes. The primary goal is to increase student performance in these courses. However, the program also increases student performance in all science classes and increase likelihood of graduating in four years.
The benefits of participating in this program will last throughout your time at FGCU. We will help you discover how learning works best for you!!!
The five-day program utilizes study skill workshops, sample lecture and lab activities, open discussions, practice exams, and study sessions to preview the level of rigor and expectations at the college level. The program gives students an opportunity to meet biology faculty and other students who are also majoring in biology, environmental sciences, marine science, nursing, engineering, and other science-based programs.

MEALS: Students are responsible for their own meals but the daily schedule will provide time for students to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As an optional cost to the program, students can purchase a $50 Eagle Dollar card that can be used to purchase meals at various locations on campus. The card’s balance never expires so the student can continue using the money through the year. Purchased cards will be distributed to students on the first day.
HOUSING: Participants have multiple options for housing. Students living on-campus during the 2019-2020 academic year will have the privilege of moving into their selected dorm on the morning of Wednesday August 14. You will therefore not have to pay any additional housing cost for the program. Students living off-campus in the southwest Florida area planning to commute during the 2019-2020 academic year can simply commute to Boot Camp as well. In other words, you are NOT required to stay on campus for this program. Remaining students that need housing for the program can find several hotel options near campus.
WAIVER: All participants will be required to sign a liability release form at the beginning of the boot camp program. Any participant under 18 years of age will require a parent or guardian’s signature.
