BEYOND CLASSROOM
Clinical Experience
- Work or volunteer in a dental setting.

Shadow a variety of dentists (general, pediatric, orthodontic, etc.). Keep a log of hours, dates, and reflections.
- Check individual programs for specific patient care and shadowing hour requirements.
Undergraduate Research

Participate in research relevant to science or health.

Consider pursuing a faculty-mentored research project through the following courses:

Join FGCU’s Pre-Dental Society, Global Medical Brigades, or Pre-Health Pathways Society.

Volunteer in public health offices or community outreach events related to oral health.

Some dental schools value hands-on experience in a healthcare environment, even if not dentistry-specific.

- Engage in service-learning projects, which are part of FGCU’s graduation requirement and valued by dental schools.
- Volunteer in underserved communities or non-clinical service organizations.
Dental School Preparation

Plan ahead for the Dental Admission Test (DAT) — many students take it junior year.
- FGCU offers Seminar in Medicine I, II, and III (BSC 1930L, BSC 2930L, and BSC 3930L).
