Medicine

This track is designed for students who plan to apply to medical school (MD or DO) after earning their undergraduate degree. Most students major in Biology – Pre-Professional Concentration, but other majors may also be appropriate. BEYOND CLASSROOM

Clinical Exposure

  • Volunteer or work in healthcare settings (e.g., hospitals, clinics, hospice).

  • Shadow physicians in a variety of specialties to gain insight into the medical profession.

Undergraduate Research 

  • Join a faculty-led research lab (often available to biology majors).

  • You may also pursue BSC 4910C (Senior Project - Research) in your senior year for capstone credit.

Leadership and Extracurricular Involvement

  • Take on leadership roles in student organizations, especially health-related or service-based clubs.

  • Join pre-professional organizations or FGCU’s Seminar in Medicine I and II courses for support in preparing application materials and interviews.

Service and Community Engagement

  • Engage in service-learning projects, which are part of FGCU’s graduation requirement and valued by medical schools.

  • Volunteer in underserved communities or non-clinical service organizations to demonstrate empathy and civic responsibility.

Entrance Exam Preparation

  • Begin MCAT preparation during your sophomore or junior year.

  • FGCU offers Seminar in Medicine I & II (BSC 1930L and BSC 2930L) covering:

    • MCAT prep

    • Interview skills

    • CV and personal statement writing

Other Enrichment Opportunities

  • Summer internships or study abroad experiences (e.g., fieldwork in the Amazon or Galapagos) may strengthen your application.

  • Participate in on-campus events with admissions officers or FGCU alumni in medicine.
