Southwest Florida State of the Arts

Understanding the state of the arts in Southwest Florida first requires an understanding of the region the industry caters to. In this report, we provide a detailed analysis of demographic, education, labor force and community indicators that help tell the story of the arts sector in Southwest Florida. Findings from the report include:

  • Southwest Florida is characterized as an older population, with 14.5 percent of the total population nearing retirement and another 31.3 percent at least 65 years old in 2023. 
  • Majority of PK-12 course enrollments into fine arts courses focus on the visual arts and music education, while a smaller share go toward drama and dance.
  • The Fine Arts Industry had 16,166 employees in 2023 and was projected to 18,425 by 2035, a 14.0 percent increase.
  • Employees in these industries tend to trend younger in 2023, with 35.9 percent of all employees under the 34 years old (compared to 30.7 of all employees in the region).
  • As of May 2025, the region had a higher concentration of visual arts organizations, museums and other nonprofit arts organizations relative to the state.
