Each year in April, the Department of Records Management hosts a “Personal Shred Day” providing an opportunity for FGCU faculty, staff, and students to shred their personal documents (paper only). As identity and data theft become more prevalent, this is an ideal opportunity to safely dispose of bank records, tax returns or anything with sensitive or confidential data.
This is a free service, provided by Secure On-Site Shredding, the contractor who services the University’s paper and electronic shredding needs each month. The shred truck is conveniently located at the Cohen Student Union bus loop for drive-up service. Participants can bring as many documents as they like as there is no limit. Personal boxes and bags are loaded into a bin that are lifted into the truck via a vertical conveyor system. From a color monitor mounted to the shredding truck, participants may watch their documents being fed into the shredder.
Documents are shredded to pieces 1/4” X 1-1/2” or smaller so that there is reasonable assurance that the documents cannot be reconstructed. All paper is bundled into rectangular bales at the Secure On-site Shredding warehouse and later sold to recyclers to be reconstructed into other paper products.
In 2018, within a two hour time span, 85 people filled fourteen 95 gallon bins with their personal documents.
The Annual Personal Shred Day for 2019 is Tuesday, April 23 from 12:00pm-2:00pm in Parking Lot 5 (near the bus drop off by the Student Plaza).
