The Black Experience in Lee County | /about/leadership/officeoftheprovost/images/black_experience_in_lee_county.jpg | 24 | 01 | 2022 | 9:00am - 5:00pm | 95 | 3 | Archives & Special Collections - Library 3rd Floor, Rm 322 |
From the first permanent African American settler in Fort Myers to the creation of the Lee County Black History Society, The Black Experience in Lee County has included both oppression and triumph. The rich history begins with the arrival of Nelson Tillis on Christmas Day in 1867. The arrival of Tillis and the first railroad to cross the Caloosahatchee in 1904 led to an increase in the African American population, prompting the development of segregated neighborhoods known as Safety Hill and Pinetucky. With the people as the unshakeable foundation, the institutional pillars that are known throughout the community today began to take shape. The community first sees the building of churches in the late 1800s, as well as the creation of Williams Academy in 1912. The erection of the Jones Walker Hospital would follow, along with the building of Dunbar High School in 1926. In 1946, Safety Hill would become known as Dunbar Heights to better reflect the hopes and dreams of African Americans.
The members of the Black community worshiped, learned, assembled, organized, and shared their lives in these sacred spaces. The pride of the community, these spaces nurtured strong future business and civic leaders and fostered the growth of political, educational, spiritual, and social voices celebrated in the exhibition. Of course, there cannot be triumphs without barriers to overcome. The long history of Lee County proves time and again that the Dunbar community was resilient against segregation, prejudice, Jim Crow laws, and racial violence. The ‘human’ pillars paved the way as they ran for civic office, fought for integration and voting rights, and documented news and current events through the lens of the Black experience.
In the face of challenges, the Black community in Fort Myers remained resolute, becoming an example of resilience for all citizens who call Southwest Florida home. The institutional pillars featured in the exhibition continue to amplify community voices and experiences through stories of success. In partnership with the Lee County Black History Society, multi-generational resident and local historian, Jarrett Eady, and many residents who brought the history to life, the Florida Gulf Coast University Archives and Special Collections is humbled to present the 2022 Spring exhibition: The Black Experience in Lee County.
Please contact Bailey Rodgers, brodgers@fgcu.edu to schedule a class tour. |

Ravensbrück Traveling Exhibit | /about/leadership/officeoftheprovost/images/ravensbruck.jpg | 18 | 04 | 2022 | 9:00am - 5:00pm | 12 | 3 | University Library Archives |
As a follow up to the University Archives and Special Collections’ 2020 exhibition, “To Life: The Liberation of Ravensbrück” we invite the community to experience the traveling exhibit Ravensbrück – We Who Lived There currently viewable on the first floor in Library West of Bradshaw Library.
Ravensbrück was a concentration camp for women located about 90 km north of Berlin. It opened in 1939 imprisoning 130,000 women and children from more than 30 different countries. In April of 1945, more than 21,000 survivors were rescued during the Red Cross’ White Bus Rescue Action and brought to Sweden.
The exhibit, Ravensbrück – We Who Lived There, is the result of a joint student and teacher project at Katedralskolan in Lund, Sweden 2018–2019. Students from the Advanced History Program and the IB Program beautifully share the stories of the women and children imprisoned at Ravensbrück.
The exhibit is brought to you by FGCU’s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Research and the University Archives and Special Collections. It was brought to the United States by Better Futures Foundation, a Sarasota based 501(c)3 non-profit.

Allen Trevett is the President & CEO of Allyn International, Inc. Allen grew up in the Capital District of New York State. He attended State University in Albany, New York, where he majored and was granted degrees in Economics and Accounting. During his years at State University, and continued after graduation, he ran a small construction firm up until 1976. He then changed career fields and started working for General Electric Company (GE), where he held a wide variety of positions. During the tenure at GE he was a participant in the GE Financial Management Program, graduating in the top 5 percent. Experience and responsibilities in GE included various accounting positions including general accounting, accounts payable, inventory, customer billing systems and tax along with a stint working in the factory. In 1986 Allen relocated to Fort Myers, Florida, as one of the senior managers in a new consolidated GE Corporate finance operation. His responsibilities included tax and insurance for all major GE manufacturing businesses. In 1992, Julie Willard and Allen Trevett decided to go out on their own, and that is how Allyn International Services, Inc. (Allyn) was founded. Allyn International was incorporated February 14, 1992. For the first three years Allyn focused on the exporting and importing of cars and providing local brokerage support in the Tampa Bay area where their operating office was located. In 1995, they relocated back to Fort Myers, Florida, at a time when the business was being reshaped to support larger firms including multinationals. The services mix also changed, Allyn’s primary services now included tax, global trade compliance and logistics, which are its core services to this day. Allen Trevett as CEO of Allyn, led to what it is today, a company that serves some of the most significant businesses in the world. Allyn is headquartered in Fort Myers, Florida, with regional headquarters in Prague, Czech Republic, Dubai, UAE and Shanghai, China. Allyn has over 400 employees in 22 countries and is a true global service provider. Sales currently exceed $35 MM and Allyn has doubled in size in the last five years. Allyn International has a strong set of core values including contribution, creativity, enjoyment, excellence, focused growth, integrity, prosperity and well-being. Biennially, Allyn holds an employee retreat at Camp Pine Knot, SUNY Cortland, Raquette Lake, New York. These retreats have a strong focus on the Allyn values. Allen Trevett is a U.S. Licensed Customs broker and freight forwarder. For the last three years he has been on the board of directors at View Arts, a nonprofit in Old Forge, New York, where he has a summer camp. Allen and his wife Cathy have been married for over 40 years. They have 2 daughters, 2 grandchildren and 2 son-in-laws.

Dr. Christopher Phillips & Cecilia Chapa Phillips, M.Ed. - Promoting Civil Discourse in the University Community | /about/leadership/officeoftheprovost/images/Lucas_Center_Civil_Discourse.jpg | 07 | 11 | 2022 | 1:00pm - 3:00pm | 1 | 1 | Virtual via Zoom |
The Lucas Center For Faculty Development invites you to join us for a session on: Promoting Civil Discourse in the University Community Presented by: Christopher Phillips, Ph.D. & Cecilia Chapa Phillips, M.Ed., Co-Founders of the Democracy Café
In an era of political polarization too often coupled with a demonstrated intolerance for a plurality of perspectives -- nowhere more evidenced these days than on many college campuses - how can we cultivate, practice, and model the habit of civil discourse? What exact IS civil discourse? Can it involve impassioned argument and at times heated debate, or does it depend on the issue, and what's at stake? How do we best frame questions so that they tend to be more conducive to thoughtful exploration of a variety of points of view, and in ways that connect? Is there an 'art' to this? How do we best go about exploring questions, especially when they touch on 'hot button' topics?
While there are no 'magic bullets' to making college campuses hotbeds of freedom of expression and dialogue, there are nonetheless some time-tested ways of moving more and more in that direction.
This workshop strives to provide a roadmap to achieving a more healthy environment when it comes to freedom of expression and thoughtful dialogue - in tandem with one another - on the college campus.
This session will be facilitated virtually via Zoom on Monday, November 7th from 1:00p-3:00p Click here or use the below link to register! https://tinyurl.com/PhillipsNovember2022

Fjelstul Art Lecture with Holly Hanessian: A Socially Engaged Practice | /about/leadership/officeoftheprovost/images/hurricane_emergency_art_kit.jpg | 03 | 11 | 2022 | 6:00pm | 1 | 1 | U. Tobe Recital Hall, Music Building |
FGCU Art Program Presents Holly Hanessian FORT MYERS, FL - As part of the Fjelstul Art Lecture Series, the FGCU Art Program presents Holly Hanessian: A Socially Engaged Practice. This lecture will take place on Thursday, November 3 at 6:00 p.m. in the U. Tobe Recital Hall in the Music Building on the FGCU campus. There will be a light reception to follow in the Arts Complex Lobby. This lecture is free and open to the public. Community engagement is at the heart of Holly Hanessian’s creative practice. Her project-based artworks emphasize inventive solutions for social issues that connect people to new ways of thinking. In each project, she meets with community members on a one-to-one basis to build relationships, create ownership, and collaborate. Her current project links plastic bottled water overuse to climate change and includes the production of Hurricane Emergency Art Kits and Go-Packs for seasonal assistance with hurricane preparedness and recovery. Hanessian’s artwork is positioned at the intersection of socially engaged art, design, craft, and contemporary art. Many of the community-based art projects focus on at-risk populations who are often underrepresented and adversely affected by global warming events. The public facing projects she develops are rooted in the need to create a collectively just and sustainable life for all. Holly Hanessian is currently Professor of Art/Ceramics and MFA Graduate Program Director at Florida State University. Sponsored by Alice and Dean Fjelstul

Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the lived experiences of department chairs who participated in leadership training to determine if it added value in preparing them to be effective in their role. More specifically, the study focused on department chairs who attended the Department Chair Workshop hosted by the Institute for Academic Leadership (IAL) at Florida State University (FSU). Despite often being unprepared for the role, department chairs at higher education institutions are appointed to their positions with little or no leadership training and support. The problem, therefore, is that these department chairs are not well prepared to carry out their role. University administrators do not know if the IAL Workshop better prepares department chairs for their leadership role. An interpretative phenomenology analysis (IPA) qualitative inquiry was used for the research design as it allows for the data collection of lived experiences of the department chairs regarding training in preparation for their role. This study was guided by the following research question: What are the perceptions of department chairs regarding their lived experiences of the Department Chair Workshop hosted by the IAL at FSU in preparing them for their leadership role? Data was collected through interviews, document analysis, and field notes. Five themes were derived from this data: background experience, skills toolbox, support from colleagues, balancing expectations of the dean and faculty, and benefits of the Department Chair Training. The findings from the study can be used to inform postsecondary institution administrators on the lived experiences of the department chairs who attend training.
Keywords: department chair, leadership, leadership preparedness, leadership effectiveness, effective department chair, leadership development, organizational socialization |

As part of FGCU’s 25th anniversary, the FGCU Art Galleries present the Senior Projects, Fall 2022 from December 9-16, 2022 in the Wasmer Art Gallery in the Arts Complex on the Florida Gulf Coast University campus. The opening reception and presentations by the artists will take place in the Wasmer Art Gallery on Thursday, December 8 at 5:00 p.m. At the end of their studies, FGCU Art Majors are required to develop and present a coherent body of self-generated work. This exhibition combines their knowledge of techniques and concepts while drawing on research of historical and contemporary artists. Each senior art major in the exhibition designs and creates a unique installation that combines their technical skills and conceptual vision. The range of exhibitions is unique each year and represents what the next generation of artists are exploring. During the opening on Thursday, December 8, the artists will be present to provide an overview of their work in a public presentation. Afterwards, the public is encouraged to talk one on one with the artists and learn more about their inspiration and techniques. The artists for the Fall 2022 semester are: Angela Arroyo, Christopher W. Bicknese, Kaia M. Hein, Claire S. Jenkins, Shelby P. Johnson, Megan M. McCarthy, Samantha N. Rattner, Ben J. Schlessel, Tiffany R. Shadden, Isabella Treece, Nolan D. Tronnier. An Evening with Authors Jeff Guinn and Lyn Millner | 16 | 03 | 2023 | 6:00pm - 8:00pm | 1 | 1 | Edwards Hall 112 |
Florida Gulf Coast University and WGCU Public Media present: An Evening with Authors Jeff Guinn and Lyn Millner New evidence reveals that David Koresh, the leader of the apocalyptic group the Branch Davidians, plagiarized Cyrus Teed, the messianic founder of Estero’s Koreshan Unity. What’s more: David Koresh might have copied Teed unwittingly. Author Jeff Guinn will discuss his new book Waco: David Koresh, the Branch Davidians, and a Legacy of Rage. Guinn is a two-time Edgar finalist and the bestselling author of numerous books, including Go Down Together, The Last Gunfight, Manson, The Road to Jonestown, War on the Border, and Waco. He lives in Fort Worth, Texas, and is a member of the Texas Literary Hall of Fame. Lyn Millner, professor of journalism at FGCU, is the author of The Allure of Immortality: An American Cult, A Florida Swamp, and A Renegade Prophet, which tells the story of Cyrus Teed and his followers, the Koreshans. Join us for a fascinating visit with Guinn and Millner, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the Waco standoff and raid. Moderated by John Davis of WGCU Public Media. Book signing to follow.

FGCU Virtual Workshop: "Moving from Pesky to Productive: Designing a Healthy, Sustainable Writing Habit" | /about/leadership/officeoftheprovost/images/TAA-Workshop.PNG | 24 | 03 | 2023 | 11:00am - 12:30pm | 1 | 1 | Virtual |
Register for the Florida Gulf Coast University Virtual Workshop, "Moving from Pesky to Productive: Designing a Healthy, Sustainable Writing Habit", which will be presented by Erin McTigue on Friday, March 24 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. ET. This workshop is being offered at no cost to you as part of your TAA-FGCU Institutional Membership.
About This Workshop In this interactive workshop mythology is dispelled and findings from recent psychology research are translated specifically to writing habits. Participants first analyze one of their own already strong habits to plan for the formation of a new writing habit starting with a trigger, growing from a micro-habit, and being reinforced by rewards, including social reinforcement and tracking. Then to prevent pitfalls, participants discuss and prepare for what may derail their newly designed habits. Participants will leave with self-insight, energy and tools for remaking their writing habits. After being a traditional academic for over ten years at Texas A&M University, Erin McTigue started her own business, The Positive Academic, through which she mentors and coaches academics in writing and productivity, as well as runs workshops for faculty and graduate students. While at Texas A&M, she co-directed a university-wide writing support program and developed an academic writing course for international students. Faculty Professional Development Awards to Enhance Higher Education Pedagogy The deadline to apply for the Summer 2023 Cycle is Sunday, April 16th. Important Notes:
Eligibility: Full-time faculty members may apply for up to $750 in funding.
One way the Lucas Center supports teaching, scholarship, and service at FGCU is by offering Professional Development Awards for faculty to attend and/or present at conferences or to participate in other professional development activities (in person or virtual) that enhance their professional skills and knowledge. Applicants will be asked to describe in detail how the award will contribute to their success in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and/or service. In addition, applicants will be asked to describe how their participation in the requested activity aligns with the mission and/or goals of the Lucas Center for Faculty Development (see below). Priority will be given to faculty who have had papers/abstracts accepted for presentation and to those who make the most persuasive case for how the proposed activity aligns with the Lucas Center mission/goals and the impact it will have on their professional development. Depending on the number of applications, priority may be given to applicants who have not received a Lucas Center Professional Development Award in the previous two award cycles (https://www.fgcu.edu/lucascenter/funding).
Click here or use the below link for more information and to apply for the award up to $750! ***Please note that you will need to utilize your FGCU email and sign in through SSO (Single Sign On) to complete the application*** |

ON THE TABLE SWFL - JOIN IN THE CONVERSATION FACULTY, STAFF, STUDENTS, AND COMMUNITY ARE WELCOME! On Thursday, March 30th, thousands of neighbors, friends, colleagues, and new acquaintances will gather for conversations to share stories and generate ideas to address issues and opportunities affecting Southwest Floridians. Collaboratory, Collier Community Foundation, and Charlotte Community Foundation are partnering to present On the Table® SWFL. These gatherings will serve as a catalyst for regional collaboration to address issues and opportunities affecting area residents. FGCU is also partnering with these organizations, and would like to invite you to host an On the Table SWFL conversation or participate in one. The conversations work best as a relaxed gathering of around 8-10 people over a meal or snack. You can host a conversation anywhere that participants can meet, talk, and brainstorm – at a local restaurant, school, community center, place of worship, library, office, retailer, – literally anywhere the host chooses. The chat can be sit-down, catered, picnic, or potluck. It can happen at breakfast, lunch, dinner, happy hour, or snack time. It can be a private discussion among invited contacts or an open session that connects you with people you haven’t met yet. It’s completely up to you! Will you consider leading a conversation? You can invite co-workers, family, and friends to join. To become a host, please sign up through this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090F4AA5A72CA7FC1-fgcus Once you sign up to host a table, you will be contacted to also signup through the On the Table website. The 4:00-6:00 sessions will be at Einstein’s in the Cohen Student Union! Hosts will be provided a host toolkit to help guide discussion. After the conversation, you and your guests will receive a survey to complete. Then, as a follow-up to On the Table SWFL, the foundations will share key findings with the community and work arm-in-arm to address issues identified. To sign up to join a hosted table, please go to https://onthetableswfl.com/join/ If you have any questions, please reach out to Tracie Beck at trbeck@fgcu.edu. To learn more about On The Table SWFL, please visit https://onthetableswfl.com/. Together, we can build a better Southwest Florida |
