Issue Brief: Working from Home in Southwest Florida

When the Covid-19 pandemic first arrived to Southwest Florida in early 2020, workers and employers began to reevaluate the office setting. Workers who were accustomed to commuting to an office every day were suddenly asked to work from home as a means to reduce the spread of the virus. As time passed, vaccines and antiviral medication were developed as methods for preventing and combating the virus, but working from home still remained a popular choice when it comes to the modality of work. In this issue brief, we analyze how the work from home environment has changed in Southwest Florida coastal counties since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Industry Diversification Project: Third Quarter 2022 Report

The RERI has published the Industry Diversification Report for the third quarter of 2022. The goal of the IDI is to measure industry diversification and, by extension, that of the workforce, in each of Florida’s 24 workforce regions, the state of Florida, and the remaining 49 states. The index measure is computed quarterly, soon after the release of workforce data from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages. It spans from 0 to 10, with 0 signifying no diversification (or an economy characterized by a single industry), and 10 signifying perfect diversification (no concentration).

The Regional Economic Research Institute is pleased to announce the publication of the 2022 Southwest Florida Economic Almanac Series. The series represents a comprehensive collection of over 30 databases in a one document, allowing for an easy and thorough access to information pertaining all Southwest Florida’s counties – specifically Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee Counties. Topics covered include agriculture, charitable giving, demographics, employment, finance, education, the environment, government spending, health, housing, income and poverty statistics, and real estate.

2022 Educational and Workforce Outcomes Report

The Regional Economic Research Institute is pleased to announce the 2022 Southwest Florida Educational and Workforce Outcome Report. The 113-page report is the result of a collaborative effort between the Workforce Now group and the FutureMakers Coalition, and provides up-to-date information on education and workforce indicators for the five-county region.

Issue Brief: Microbusinesses in Southwest Florida

In this issue brief, we expand the analysis from our previously published issue brief that examined microbusinesses in Lee County, Florida by expanding the geographical area to all of Southwest Florida (defined as the five-county area encompassing Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee counties). Information in this Issue Brief was collected on July 29, 2022 from USA Reference database. The database represents a list of establishment-level records that is continuously updated to provide the most up-to-date information about businesses. US Reference provided 72,800 records containing all establishments with no more than 500 employees located in the entire region. The list included some records for individuals (primarily in the Health Care and Social Assistance industry) that worked for the same establishment. These records were removed from the analysis. Furthermore, all establishments that were in Public Administration were removed. This reduced the total number of records to 62,268.
