A Safe and Sustainable University
Environmental Health and Safety supports the university's teaching, research, and public service mission by assisting members of the campus community in meeting their responsibility to ensure a safe, healthy and sustainable environment for students, employees and visitors.
Environmental Health and Safety will assist the university in achieving national prominence
through innovative and effective programs in both safety and sustainability.
Importance of Reporting Near Misses
In workplace safety, a near miss is an event where a potential hazard or incident almost led to injury, property damage, or illness, but no harm or damage actually occurred. It's essentially a "close call" where a small change in timing or position could have resulted in a serious incident.
At FGCU, reporting near misses is crucial for safety. Here's why:
- Prevent Accidents: Identify hazards and take proactive measures to prevent future incidents.
- Improve Practices: Analyze reports to identify trends in unsafe conditions and improve practices.
- Raise Awareness: Increase vigilance about hazards.
- Mitigate Risks: Take immediate action for a safer environment.
- Enhance Safety Culture: Promote transparency and continuous improvement.
Report near misses promptly using the Near Miss Report link near the bottom of this webpage.
Thank you for doing your part keeping our campus community safe!

The Institutional Safety Committee
The Institutional Safety Committee (ISC) at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) promotes and facilitates a safe campus environment by requiring all research or teaching activities meet Federal, state, local, and University safety policies and regulations. The “activities” include and are not limited to FGCU internal awards, externally funded research grants and contracts, class or laboratory projects/studies, self-initiated projects/studies, departmental research, etc. To ensure compliance, ISC reviews, approves and monitors all applicable activities.
