Skills Apply in the Workplace and in Graduate School
Students are scholars. Through research, they engage with and contribute to our body of knowledge while developing skills for the workplace or the pursuit of an advanced degree. Florida Gulf Coast University’s Office of Scholarly Innovation & Student Research supports research, scholarship, and creative activities across all disciplines.
Research experience can be beneficial to careers in a classroom, courtroom, boardroom, and much more. The process teaches students project design from start to finish, allows them to embrace constructive criticism and develop the ability to overcome challenges. It also emphasizes using critical analysis for decision making by leading students to refine their ideas based on evidence. Research hones skills in verbal and written communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, resiliency, teamwork, ethics, and compliance.
These skills appeal to employers seeking graduates able to work independently and with a team, and who can express thoughts clearly and concisely to different audiences. Students pursuing an advanced degree also benefit by having already presented at conferences and published their work as undergraduates.
