Because individuals write history, they tend to record only dominant narratives. Or they massage, adjust, or fabricate history with an intent to prove their unique way of seeing the world. So, history is full of holes. Suzan-Lori Parks is a celebrated and prize-winning American writer. Her unique play is a story about a black Abraham Lincoln impersonator who performs his role at the Hole of History Museum. Parks’ experimental work critiques our shared narrative. It mimics the problematic entertainment styles of the past and brings us into a conversation about our present. It flows with the rhythm of song without the accompaniment of music and takes on aspects of a photograph without the use of a camera. It is a work of memory, mourning, and hope—a hope that someday the whole of history will be understood by all.
