Generative AI and FGCU Teaching and Learning

Generative AI, a sub-type of Artificial Intelligence (AI), includes tools such as ChatGPT, Google Bard, and DALL-E that create new written and visual content in response to a user prompt. The Generative AI responses, which have various levels of quality and accuracy, are generated from data patterns learned from huge volumes of data.

The FGCU student code of conduct acknowledges Generative AI tools. FGCU REGULATION 4.002, Student Code of Conduct and Student Conduct Review Process, (Section B, Item 1), identifies student conduct that may be subject to disciplinary action. This includes:

Submitting the work of another person or entity as your own. “Entity” includes Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT.
Receiving assistance that has not been authorized by the course instructor. This includes assistance from Generative AI tools.
The use of sources that go beyond those authorized by the instructor. This includes using Generative AI tools as a source.

When should I use Generative AI tools like ChatGPT? When should I avoid it?
- Your course instructor has the final say about what is allowed in their course. Some instructors embrace Generative AI tools and allow their use, while others prohibit their use. For each of your courses refer to the course syllabus, activity and assignment information, and communication from your instructor to find out if the use of Generative AI tools is permitted or prohibited. If in doubt, ask your instructor.

- Alert students to the Generative AI Syllabus statement. The Generative AI statement is within the Core Syllabus Policy Statements.
- Remind students that Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT have many limitations. Learning to think and write critically, critically evaluate information, and to recognize and use genuine sources are important skills for success in a rapidly changing world.
- Be explicit with students about your expectations regarding the use of Generative AI tools for activities, assignments, exams, etc. and be clear with students that engaging in unauthorized use of Generative AI tools will be considered a violation of the Code of Conduct. The following sample statements may be helpful in writing usage statements tailored to your teaching philosophy and your course(s):
  - Use prohibited:
    - Since writing, analytical, and critical thinking skills are part of the learning outcomes of this course, all writing assignments should be prepared by the student. Developing strong competencies in this area will prepare you for a competitive workplace. Therefore, generative AI submissions are not permitted and will be treated as plagiarism. Unless it is explicitly approved by the professor, generative AI submissions are not permitted and will be treated as plagiarism. (FGCU - Chrissann Ruehle)
    - All assignments should be your own original work, created for this class. We will discuss what constitutes plagiarism, cheating, or academic dishonesty more in class. You must do your own work.   - Use is freely permitted with no acknowledgement: Students are allowed to use advanced automated tools (artificial intelligence or machine learning tools such as ChatGPT or Dall-E 2) on assignments in this course; no special documentation or citation is required. (University of Delaware)

    - Students are allowed to use generative AI tools such as ChatGPT on assignments in this course if instructor permission is obtained in advance. Unless given permission to use those tools, each student is expected to complete each assignment without substantive assistance from others, including generative AI tools. (University of Delaware)

  - Use only with prior permission and with acknowledgement: There are situations and contexts within this course where you will be asked to use generative AI tools to explore how they can be used. Outside of those circumstances, you are discouraged from using generative AI tools to generate content (text, video, audio, images) that will end up in any student work (assignments, activities, responses, etc.) that is part of your evaluation in this course. Any student work submitted using generative AI tools should clearly indicate what work is the student’s work and what part is generated by the generative AI.     - I expect you to use generative AI, such as ChatGPT, in this class. Some assignments will require it. Learning to use generative AI is an emerging skill, and I provide tutorials in the course about how to use them. I am happy to meet and help with these tools during office hours or after class.
      Generative AI is a tool, but one that you need to acknowledge using. Please include a paragraph at the end of any assignment in which you used Generative AI, explaining what you used the Generative AI for and what prompts you used to get the results.     - Students are allowed to use generative AI tools such as ChatGPT on assignments in this course if that use is properly documented and credited. For example, text generated using ChatGPT should include a citation such as: “ChatGPT. (YYYY, Month DD of query). “Text of your query.” Generated using OpenAI. https://chat.openai.com/” Material generated using other tools should follow a similar citation convention.
