Ensuring Accessible Material
Step 1
Determine what document/software/project is being created----Review all pieces of information that are being disseminated and determine what needs to be made accessible.
-
- Who is the audience?
- What types of accessibility are needed?
- Closed captioning, alt text, color, etc
- How many graphics do you have? Can they be turned into text? If they can’t, what other form of display can you use?
Step 2
Use Access tools to assist with making the document/software/project accessible-----FGCU has many tools available to assist you with ensuring accessibility of your projects. Below is a list of tools and where they can be used:
-
- Kaltura (recording and closed captioning software)
- Ally (Canvas accessibility checker)
- Software Checklist
- Userway (website accessibility checker)
- Adobe Acrobat Suite (PDF’s)
Step 3
Collaboration with Campus Partners---It is essential to work with campus partners to ensure that your project meets all accessibility guidelines. For example, if you are updating your Canvas page, you may want to request assistance from your Instructional Designer to ensure that you are using Kaltura, Ally, and other accessibility tools efficiently and effectively. You may also work with peers in your department, or those in charge of departmental media.
Step 4
Develop Timelines---Ensuring accessibility takes time. You may have to edit closed captions, write texts to all graphics, run through accessibility checkers, and/or communicate with digital media departments. You do not want to disseminate your information until it is completely accessible, so giving yourself time to account for accessibility will ensure your project is submitted timely!
