The Washington Center Program for Internships
Since 1998, FGCU has partnered with the Washington Center Program for Internships
to provide our students with the opportunity to serve as interns in Washington, DC.
With the internship program, students spend a semester or a summer term as interns
with governmental, non-governmental, or private sector agencies in the Washington
metropolitan area. They also take an additional, upper-division course offered by
Washington-based instructors chosen for depth of their professional experience and
knowledge. The program mentors students individually to provide them with guidance
in pursuing both personal and professional objectives. The Florida Legislature provides
a generous scholarship for students in the program – enough to cover the program costs
of the internship program. Since 1998, FGCU has sent more than 90 students to the
Washington Center for Internships. In the summer of 2024, three political science
students participated in the Washington Center Internship Program. Students interested
in participating in the program should contact Dr. Coughlin at rcoughli@fgcu.edu.

While working for a member of the Florida Legislature within the atmosphere of the
Florida Capitol, students will have the opportunity to apply their academic coursework
to an immersive work environment, develop the skills necessary to be successful in
their intended career and be prepared for entrance into the workforce as a highly
qualified candidate. For more information, contact Dr. Roger Green at rgreen@fgcu.edu.
