Academic Learning Compact
Consistent with its mission and guiding principles, Florida Gulf Coast University
is committed to academic excellence and continuous quality improvement, as supported
by a sound teaching-learning process. Within this process, students and instructors
share responsibility for learning that is a movement from the simple to the complex,
the concrete to the abstract, and the dependent to the independent. The Academic Learning
Compact (ALC) initiative supports the teaching-learning process by clearly identifying
expected core student learning outcomes in the areas of content/discipline knowledge
and skills, communication skills, and critical thinking skills; aligning curricula
with expectations; and using assessment to guide continuous improvement.
Content/Discipline Knowledge and Skills
Graduates will be able to:
- Show evidence of competency in creating student centered Social Science learning environments
and has a deep knowledge of current research, practice, and frameworks.
- Show evidence of culturally responsive Social Science practice, a commitment to developing
students to live and lead in communities, and the preparation of citizens for democratic
life.
- Show evidence of Social Science practice that affirms and embraces the lived-experiences
of disparate communities and individuals, seeking to build coalitions, alliances and
communities that foster democratic ideals and praxis.
Content/Discipline Knowledge and Skills are assessed through course projects, teaching
demonstrations, lesson and unit creation, exams, papers, and other presentations,
completed in SSE 4153 Social Science Methods 6-12 and SSE 4940 Internship, as well
as other upper division courses required for the major.
Communication Skills
Graduates will be able to:
- Demonstrate the commitment to employ appropriate Social Science resources in conjunction
with others to meet goals, innovate, and discover.
- Demonstrate the ability to use electronic and mechanical means to create empowering,
innovative, and efficient Social Science learning environment.
Communication Skills are assessed through course projects, teaching demonstrations
and other presentations, completed in SSE 4153 Social Science Methods 6-12 and SSE
4940 Internship, as well as other upper division courses required for the major.
Critical Thinking Skills
Graduates will be able to:
- Demonstrates planning, goal-setting, and management of high-quality practice, tasks,
and assessment in the Social Science learning environment.
- Demonstrates a commitment to developing oneself as a reflective, public intellectual
and educator through self-analysis and professional planning.
Critical thinking skills are assessed through course projects, teaching demonstrations,
lesson and unit creation, exams, papers, and other presentations, completed in SSE
4153 Social Science Methods 6-12 and SSE 4940 Internship, as well as other upper division
courses required for the major.
