It’s been nearly one month since Hurricane Ian made landfall in our region, and the storm’s impact continues to reverberate through FGCU’s campus community. FGCU continues to work with local, state and federal agencies to provide storm-related resources to help our students and employees, especially those in need of temporary housing.
If you are in need of temporary housing, you need to register with your insurance company as well as FEMA.
HOW TO REGISTER WITH FEMA
After filing a claim with your insurance company, Hurricane Ian survivors can apply for FEMA assistance by visiting disasterassistance.gov, calling the disaster assistance helpline at 800-621-3362, or using the FEMA mobile app.On your FEMA application, you will be asked if you are able to live in your primary residence. This is important, regardless of if you rent or own a home, as various housing assistance programs are available to those whose home received major damage or has been destroyed as a result of the storm.
TYPES OF HOUSING ASSISTANCE
If you are eligible for any of FEMA’s housing assistance programs, you will receive confirmation via an automated phone call, text message and/or email (depending on how you signed up to receive communications from FEMA when you applied for assistance).- Transitional Sheltering Assistance: A program that provides temporary housing in hotels and motels to eligible hurricane survivors from 18 counties. FEMA pays the cost of room, taxes and non-refundable pet fees directly to participating hotels and motels.
- Direct Temporary Housing Assistance: A program available in Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto and Lee counties that may include:
- Transportable temporary housing: Travel trailers or manufactured housing units set up at a private site or commercial park, potentially including group sites.
- Direct lease of existing, ready-to-occupy residential properties: Lease of vacation rentals, corporate apartments, second homes, single-family homes, cooperatives, condominiums and townhouses, etc.
- Multi-family lease and repair: FEMA funds the repair or improvement of existing, vacant multi-family rental properties that eligible applicants can use for temporary housing.
- Rental Assistance: Applicants who do not qualify for direct temporary housing may qualify for temporary rental assistance so they have somewhere to live while they make plans for permanent housing.
APPEALING FEMA DENIALS
If you have been denied a FEMA claim, it is advised that you appeal the decision in person at a local Disaster Recovery Center. A representative may be able to help you resolve the reason for a denial. Find the closest site to you by using the DRC locator map.EMPLOYEES: HAVE A ROOM TO SHARE?
In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, FGCU launched RoomSync, a housing platform that connects employees who need a place to live with those who have the space to spare. Access the free portal today by logging in to the Workday sign-on webpage. After logging in, look for details under the announcements box on the right side of the home page. During this difficult time, FGCU has learned that some of our employees have space available that they would like to share with colleagues who have been displaced due to Hurricane Ian. To help connect people, FGCU has launched a new housing tool for employees that will connect those who need a place to live with those who have the space to spare.
The housing tool is called RoomSync, and the platform is accessible by FGCU employees through the Workday sign-on webpage. To be eligible for this service, you must be an active employee with an FGCU email address and UIN. Student-workers are not eligible for this service.
The platform is free to use and operates similar to social media platforms, where you will be asked to create an online profile, complete with pictures and information about your interests and hobbies.
Through RoomSync, FGCU employees will fill out a simple questionnaire. The answers will be used to match potential users based on their personality and lifestyle. As part of the survey, employees will be asked about their unique needs, such as whether they have pets, children, need multiple rooms or a single bedroom.
From here, RoomSync will match employees with people of similar interests and needs. Ultimately, employees will be able to swipe through potential roommates to find the ideal housing match.
It will be up to matched individuals to discuss and agree to any rental agreements, monthly payments or fees.

Campus signs blocking water fountains and fill stations are now being removed.
If you live off-campus, there may still be an active boil-water notice in your area. Please check with your local municipalities for the most up-to-date information on your neighborhood.
The 1% of residences still on a boil-water notice for Lee County Utilities are:
- Town & River neighborhood at McGregor Boulevard and Cypress Lake Drive
- North Trail RV along Old Orange River Boulevard
- All of Siesta Isles, which includes Siesta Drive, Cutlass Drive, Deep Passage Lane and Old Pelican Bay Drive.
A map of the affected areas is available through the county’s website, www.leegov.com.

To help address the adverse impacts Hurricane Ian and its aftermath had on our employees, FGCU has launched a major disaster leave-sharing plan. The Hurricane Ian Disaster Leave Program allows staff to deposit personally accrued annual leave and faculty to deposit personally accrued sick leave to an FGCU-sponsored leave bank, which will distribute annual leave to colleagues who need it most.
Who is eligible?
An employee may be eligible for the leave program if they suffered severe hardship that requires them to be absent from work. Examples of severe hardship include displacement, the need to remediate flood damage to an employee’s home, loss of vehicle/transportation options due to flood, inability to physically travel to campus due to road closures or obstructions, and/or inability to work or telework due to local school or daycare closures.
Recipients:
- must be in a leave-accruing classification. OPS employees are not eligible.
- will be paid at their normal rate of compensation
- must only use the leave time for reasons related to Hurricane Ian and its aftermath, as described above.
Disaster leave will be available in one-week (or 40-hour) increments. Impacted employees who continue to experience severe hardships can request additional weeks of leave for up to four weeks (or 160 hours), depending on the balance of leave hours remaining in the pool. The leave time must be used by Dec. 31, 2022, and recipients can choose to use the time all at once or spread the weeks out intermittently as necessary.
All paid leave granted to recipients of the program is considered wages, and it is subject to Federal Insurance Contribution Act (FICA), Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA), and other federal, state, local, or municipal tax withholding requirements.
The leave may not be converted to cash.
How to donate
If you are interested in donating leave time, contact the Human Resources Benefits Department via email at edennis@fgcu.edu. Leave donors may contribute leave for up to four weeks (or 160 hours). Please note: employees cannot designate that their leave time be used by specific recipients.
Any unused donated leave remaining in the bank at the time Hurricane Ian no longer qualifies as a major disaster will be proportionally returned to the leave donors within a reasonable time.
How to apply
The Hurricane Ian Disaster Leave Program application is on FGCU’s Hurricane Ian recovery website. Please submit your completed application to edennis@fgcu.edu.

The FGCU community has suffered significant loss as a result of Hurricane Ian, and our thoughts are with those who have been most impacted at this time. We are working to identify members of our Eagle family who are most in need of assistance. We still need to hear from every student, faculty and staff member to know how you are doing, so please contact the FGCU Storm Recovery Call Center at (239) 310-5398. The information you provide helps flag your specific needs to our FGCU emergency response teams for students and employees, so we can guide you through the recovery process.
Academically, our goal is to provide the best learning environment for students, while recognizing that some students and faculty will be unable to start back on Monday, Oct. 10. Maintaining continuity, even during these challenging times, ensures the integrity of an FGCU degree and the impact our students will have on the world. With this in mind, we are very sensitive to and aware of the large-scale impact that Hurricane Ian has had on our community, and we are committed to work through these difficulties with our students, faculty, and staff.
As we move forward, flexibility is key. We recognize there is no ideal solution to meet the needs of every student and faculty member on campus, but we believe this is the best guarantee for student success while emphasizing flexibility. We have all been affected in some way by Hurricane Ian.
Please see all the details about the revised academic calendar for the fall 2022 terms at fgcu.edu/hurricaneian. Based on the concerns you have already addressed, we have dedicated FAQs for our students, faculty and staff.

Toggle More InfoHurricane Ian – Advisory 13 | Oct. 1, 2022It has been three days since Hurricane Ian came onshore in our region, and we need to know how you are doing.
Yesterday, we launched the FGCU Storm Recovery Call Center for students, faculty and staff to check in with the university. Think of it as a wellness call.
Here’s how it works
By calling (239) 310-5398, you will be put through to a live call center where operators will ask you for identifying information (your name, UIN, association to the university) and details about your unique status. The call line operators can answer your questions, refer you to resources and flag your needs to FGCU emergency response teams, who are here to guide you through the recovery process.
Can’t get through? Leave a message.
If the call volume exceeds our ability to answer the FGCU Storm Recovery Call Center phone lines, a recording will prompt you to leave a message. Please leave your full name, UIN, contact information and your unique status so we know how to reach you.
Can’t call? Fill out the survey online.
If calling isn’t an option (or not your preference for communication), fill out the FGCU Storm Self Check-In. It asks the same questions. Here’s the link: https://form.jotform.com/222735776089166
Did your conditions change? Let us know.

Advisory 5
Toggle More InfoHurricane Ian - Advisory 5 | Sept. 26, 2022
Good afternoon,
FGCU is canceling all classes Tuesday and Wednesday out of an abundance of caution.
Campus leaders will continue to monitor the storm’s potential impact to the Southwest Florida region with local, state and national experts. FGCU will notify campus stakeholders about Thursday operations by 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Storm expectations
The latest models from the National Hurricane Center show that Ian, now a Category 1 hurricane, will continue to strengthen on its approach to Cuba today. The storm’s intensity is anticipated to grow to Category 3 or 4 status as it makes its way through the Gulf of Mexico, with most models agreeing the slow-moving storm will pass closely by Southwest Florida.
However, the width and size of the storm means that the outer rainbands will begin moving into our area Tuesday afternoon. Storm models indicate that we are most likely to experience tropical-storm-force winds beginning late Tuesday evening, with the winds continuing through Thursday morning. Tornadoes and flooding, particularly of already saturated areas, are possible.
Business operations
- All campus preparations ahead of the storm should be complete by the close of business Monday.
- Only employees who are classified as essential personnel or those identified by their supervisors as vital to campus operations will be allowed on campus Tuesday and Wednesday. Please contact your supervisor if you are unsure of your status.
- We encourage all employees to prepare their home ahead of the storm, know their storm-surge risks and have evacuation plans in place. FGCU will not allow employees or their families to shelter in offices or buildings on any of our campus locations during a tropical event.
Academics
- All classes, labs and academic activity at FGCU’s main campus and other properties are canceled Tuesday and Wednesday.
- FGCU will be fully operational through the remainder of Monday, as scheduled.
Housing
- Residential students who will remain on campus for the duration of the storm Tuesday and Wednesday will be required to relocate to a university-designated shelter.
- Details about the sheltering location and evacuation protocol will be communicated directly to students who live on campus via Housing.
Dining
- Food and beverage services will be provided to residential students at the university-designated shelter. SoVi Dining hours will be modified and announced later today. All other dining locations on campus will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
Events
- All on-campus events are canceled Tuesday and Wednesday.
Additional updates to campus will be sent as necessary.

Advisory 4
Toggle More InfoTropical Storm Ian - Advisory 4 | Sept. 25, 2022
Good afternoon,
The latest forecasts for Tropical Storm Ian continue to show a shifting track along the coastline of Florida, decreasing Southwest Florida’s presence in the extended forecast cone. However, the National Hurricane Center maintains that all coastal areas of the Gulf Coast could face the potential of dangerous storm surge, tropical-storm-force winds and rainfall that may flood already saturated areas of the state.
According to the current predictions, tropical-storm-force winds are most likely to arrive Tuesday through Wednesday.
Because there are no expected weather impacts to our region tomorrow, FGCU will continue normal business operations and classes Monday, Sept. 26, as scheduled. This is in concert with our colleagues across Southwest Florida.
Here’s what you should know:
Business operations
- For employees who have special circumstances, coordinate with your supervisor and follow the work-from-home policies we have in place.
- All campus preparations ahead of the storm should be complete by the close of business Monday.
- We encourage all employees to prepare their home ahead of the storm, know their storm-surge risks and have evacuation plans in place. Please note that FGCU will not allow employees or their families to shelter in offices or buildings on any of our campus locations during a tropical event.
Academics
- All academic activities, regardless of modality, remain on schedule for Monday. It is expected that students remain in contact with their individual professors about storm-related plans that would prevent them from attending in-person classes Monday.
Housing
- No evacuations have been issued for student housing at this time, and residential staff will remain available 24 hours a day throughout the week. Residential students who remain on campus are permitted to stay in their units.
- In the event the university determines an evacuation is required, Housing staff will work directly with residential students to determine their sheltering needs and announce any plans.
Dining
- Dining locations on campus will remain open for normal hours Monday.
Events
- All on-campus events may continue as planned Monday.
FGCU’s leadership team will meet tomorrow. Our next email update to campus will go out after 2 p.m. Monday.
Please send any storm-related questions to FGCUupdate@fgcu.edu. Stay safe, Eagles!

Toggle More InfoTropical Storm Ian - Advisory 3 | Sept. 24, 2022
Good evening,
Tropical Storm Ian continues to shift west in the latest forecasts from the National Hurricane Center. As a result, the extended, five-day cone shifts further north to include Florida’s Panhandle, limiting Southwest Florida’s prominence in the forecast.
Even if the storm continues on its westward track, coastal areas of Florida are likely to face dangerous storm surge, tropical-force winds and heavy rainfall that can lead to flooding in already saturated areas. Forecasts show Ian maturing into a major hurricane Tuesday on its approach to Cuba before churning toward Florida with more than 110 mph winds.
It still remains uncertain what impact the storm will have on our area. At this time, business operations and classes will continue as scheduled.
FGCU officials will continue to monitor the storm alongside local, state and national officials. Our next update to campus will go out after 1 p.m. Sunday.
If you feel you need to travel away from Southwest Florida ahead of any announcements by FGCU, it is expected that you stay in communication with your professors about remote learning and assignments. Again, we have made no decisions about canceling campus operations.

Advisory 2
Toggle More InfoTropical Storm Ian - Advisory 2 | Sept. 24, 2022
Good afternoon,
We know you are eager for definitive plans, but it is still too early to know the degree in which our region will be impacted by the storm. FGCU has not announced any changes to campus operations at this time, but we will issue emergency communications by text and email should we need to take that step. The information will also appear on our branded social media pages and be posted to our Emergency Management website.
Here’s what we know:
Tropical Depression Nine reached named-storm status, officially becoming Tropical Storm Ian, Friday evening. Forecast predictions from the National Hurricane Center show the storm may strengthen to a hurricane, potentially at or near major hurricane strength, early next week. While the extended cone has shifted further west, taking the storm track toward the Tampa region, all of Southwest Florida remains in the forecast.
Tropical storm force winds are expected in our region late Monday evening into Tuesday, with wind speeds potentially reaching up to 115 mph throughout Tuesday. Heavy rain that creates flood risks are likely inland, and coastal areas are expected to see storm surge and rip current advisories.
In order to give state and local governments time and resources to prepare in the event of a storm, Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a State of Emergency including Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades counties. FGCU Emergency Management and campus leaders continue to work in conjunction with local and state officials to track the storm’s progress.
Here’s a student checklist:
- Decide this weekend what your possible evacuation plans will be, regardless of if you live on or off campus.
- In the event we need to evacuate the residence halls, FGCU will provide a shelter alternative to residential students who require it.
- If you are not a residential student, please follow this link to learn about public sheltering options provided by Lee County: https://www.leegov.com/publicsafety/emergencymanagement/shelters Please be aware that the county has not activated any of the shelters at this time.
- If you feel you need to make arrangements to travel away from Southwest Florida ahead of any announcements by FGCU, it is expected that you stay in communication with your professors about remote learning and assignments. Again, we have made no decisions about canceling campus operations.
- Prepare your FGCU technology.
- See FGCU Emergency Management’s Student Preparedness guide.
- Download the RAVE Guardian Eagle App.
- Check your contact information in Gulfline.
Other helpful links to help you plan for a tropical event:
- Know your evacuation zone

Toggle More InfoTropical Depression Nine Advisory 1 | Sept. 23, 2022
Good afternoon,
FGCU Emergency Management, in conjunction with campus leadership, is monitoring the progress of Tropical Depression Nine.
Weather advisories from the National Hurricane Center show the storm has the potential of becoming Hurricane Hermine early next week. Southwest Florida is in the center of the projected path, and the extended forecast shows a possibility for a Tuesday morning arrival in our region.
There is still a high level of uncertainty for the strength and track of the storm, due to interactions with other storm fronts. However, the models are in agreement that the storm will intensify rapidly as it enters the Caribbean.
Due to projected storm arrival, FGCU departments should use today and this weekend to prepare for a potential hurricane.
At this time, there are no changes to campus operations ahead of the storm.
Should that need to change, FGCU will send out alerts by text and email. The information will also appear on our branded social media pages and be posted to our Emergency Management website.
Now is the time to ensure we can reach you over the weekend.
- Download the RAVE Guardian Eagle App and add up to two additional emails and phone numbers, such as immediate family members,
