Exploratory Advisors guide new students through their transition to college and help them navigate the university. Our team helps students clarify their interests, skills, and values related to class selection, major exploration and decision making, and curriculum planning. We empower students to make informed academic decisions while helping them understand policy the university resources available to assist in their academic success.

What can I do to prepare for advising at Orientation?Toggle More Info
In order to optimize your advising experience at Orientation, students should:
- Submit immunization paperwork to Student Health Services
- Send all official transcripts and test scores to Undergraduate Admissions, including any college coursework completed while in high school
- Learn about the math enrollment information
- Think about what major you are interested in and check out the four-year plan/curriculum map (Undergraduate Program List)
- Review the General Education Checklist to see what students commonly take in their first year
- Check Gulfline account for any holds and financial aid award information

Selecting the appropriate math course is based upon your ACT/SAT mathematics score and your intended major. The ACT/SAT math score determines a students default course placement into a specific math or statistics course:

Your academic advisor may recommend that you take the math placement test through the FGCU Testing Center as part of your initial enrollment process. More information will be sent to your FGCU Eagle Email account prior to Orientation.
Students that have completed college level mathematics coursework while in high school may be placed into a higher math course which will be reviewed with your advisor at Orientation.

Requirements for the first semester:New Student Meeting
These meetings are conducted in small groups during the first few weeks of the term, and serve as an initial check-in with our students to talk about how their semester has started, and to reinforce the role of the academic counselor, address any issues of concern, and to look ahead to preregistration process for the next semesterPre-Registration Meeting
The pre-registration meeting takes place once every semester. Students will be required to meet with their academic advisor to talk about their academic progress, discuss possible course options for their second semester at the university, and review the online course registration process.

These presentations are held during the first half of the term by academic advisors, and focus on reinforcing academic milestones for degree progression (and the consequences for not meeting these requirements), sharing information about the resources and opportunities that the academic college has to offer, while looking ahead to the preregistration process for the next semesterPre-Registration Meeting

All incoming first-year students are required to complete FGCU's General Education Program as part of their degree requirements. Students can use the General Education Checklist to easily view the courses that comprise the General Education Program and explore their options.
