About the FGCU Model UN Club
The FGCU Model United Nations is a student-run group aimed at deepening members' understanding
of the United Nations and international affairs through realistic simulations of UN
committee sessions. It helps students engage with global issues, sharpen critical
thinking, public speaking, and collaboration skills, by participating in competitive
forums at both state and national levels.
Weekly Gatherings
Members meet every Thursday at 6:00 PM in Sugden Hall, Room 240 (unless otherwise
noted), where they discuss current global events, practice debate, and prepare for
upcoming conferences.
Role in SWFLMUN (High School Conference)
The club plays a pivotal role in organizing SWFLMUN, FGCU’s annual high school Model UN conference held in partnership with the Naples
Council on World Affairs. Since 1994, the event has drawn hundreds of high school
delegates from across Southwest Florida.
FGCU members are essential to the conference’s success, performing tasks such as:
-
Staffing and leading committees (as chairs and co-chairs)
-
Serving as judges
-
Writing and editing background guides
-
Preparing the delegate handbook
-
Managing operations as part of the "home government" team
Educational Impact & Community Outreach
FGCU’s MUN club serves not only as a training ground for its own members but also
as a platform that empowers high school students to grow as informed, articulate individuals.
By hosting SWFLMUN, FGCU helps nurture the next generation of leaders and fosters
engagement with global issues.ncwa-fl.org
