Advising FAQ

Your advisor is determined by a combination of your current class status and declared major. Students can find their academic advisor listed on the top of their Degree Works audit in Gulfline.

It is recommended that you meet with an academic advisor at least once a semester prior to the start of each registration period. Please plan ahead as advising appointments fill up quickly during peak times.

If you would like to change your major or declare a minor, you must meet with an academic advisor in the college that houses the new major or minor and must submit a completed Change of Major form to the college advisor for the new program. A student wishing to change his or her major to a limited access program or an undergraduate student wishing to enter a graduate program must formally apply to the relevant program.

Students are not allowed to declare a double major or dual degree until they have transitioned out of Exploratory Advising to their college advisor. A student wishing to declare a double major/dual degree must submit a completed Request for Dual Major/Degree to the appropriate college advisor. For more information click here!

Holds on your record can be but are not limited  to academic holds, financial holds, library fines or parking fines. When you have a “hold” on your record you are not able to adjust your schedule in any way. In order to have the hold removed, you will need to contact the appropriate office or department. You can check for holds on your account in GULFLINE.

Registration dates and details can be found on the Department of Records & Registrations website. Spring courses are open for registration during the preceding Fall semester. Summer and Fall courses are open for registration during the preceding Spring semester.

If a course is full you may continue to monitor the course schedule for an open seat to become available. If a course has a waitlist function, you may also add yourself to the waitlist.

Occasionally you may receive an error when attempting to process your registration. Here are the common errors and what they mean:

• PRE-REQUISITE: You have not yet completed (or are not in progress with at FGCU) the required pre-requisite course. Example: you must take ENC 1101 before you can take ENC 1102.
• CO-REQUISITE:There is another course (typically a lab) that must be taken at the same time as the course you attempted to register for. You must input both CRNs prior to pressing “Submit” on the registration screen.
• CLASS:There is a credit hour restriction placed on the course. You must have at least a certain number of earned credit hours before you are eligible to take the course.
• COLLEGE or MAJOR:This class is restricted to students pursuing a particular major within a certain college or is restricted to students pursuing a particular major. This means that you do not have the correct major to take this course or you have not yet been admitted into the program.
• INSTRUCTOR:This class requires instructor approval before you are able to register. You must contact the instructor and receive their written approval (e-mail is acceptable). The approval can be forwarded to your academic advisor.
• CLOSED:This section is now full. We are unable to override the capacity for full sections. You must wait until you see an open seat, or join the waitlist, if applicable.

Prior to the end of the add/drop period, you may drop a class via GULFLINE or in person at the Department of Records & Registration.

After the end of the add/drop period and prior to the withdrawal deadline posted on the Academic Calendar, you must complete the add/drop form and submit it to the Department of Records & Registration.

Before taking a course at another institution, you must obtain prior approval to ensure that the course will count towards your degree requirements at FGCU.  You can request approval by submitting an online Transient Student Admission Application at FloridaShines

DegreeWorks is an online degree-planning tool accessible through GULFLINE. DegreeWorks organizes a student's course work in an easy to read degree audit summarizing completed and outstanding requirements for a degree, as defined in the FGCU catalog.

Students may repeat a course and exclude a previous course grade from their FGCU grade point average calculations. Undergraduate degree and non-degree students are eligible by meeting the following:

• Original grade of C- or lower has been recorded on the academic record.
• The repeated grade must be higher than the original grade.
• Only the repeated course grade will be used in the computation of the institutional GPA.
• The original and the repeat course were taken at FGCU.
• The repeat course was taken under the same grading system (A-F or S/U) as the original. S/U graded courses are not permitted to repeat as A-F or vice versa.

Additional conditions of the policy:

• Grade forgiveness will be processed automatically by Records & Registration each semester. Priority will be given to courses with higher number of credits at the time of processing.
• A grand total of two course grades may be forgiven for courses that are repeated. The same course grade may not be forgiven twice.
• Only 1000-4999 courses are eligible for grade forgiveness.
• All grades will remain on the academic transcript. The original course will be annotated with E to indicate the course has been repeated and excluded from the GPA calculation.
• With prior approval of the college dean (or school director if not a subunit of a college), a course substitution may be sought under the following conditions:
• The substitute course is a change in prefix, number, hours, or title, but not a substantive change in context from the original course.
• The substitute course replaces a course no longer offered by the institution.
• Individual academic units may have further restrictions; therefore, the student should consult with an academic advisor.
• Students who have received a bachelor’s degree from FGCU cannot apply grade forgiveness to any course taken prior to the awarding of the degree.
• Students may not use grade forgiveness for any course in which they received an academic dishonesty penalty.
• Students who wish to opt out of automatic grade forgiveness must contact Records & Registration at orr@fgcu.edu.

Students should discuss their eligibility for grade forgiveness with an academic advisor. If applied grade forgiveness alters GPA and thus affects academic standing, standing will be updated appropriately.

Students admitted to FGCU with fewer than 60 credits must complete 80 hours of service learning. Students admitted to FGCU with 60 or more credits must complete 40 hours of service learning.

Students must submit an online graduation application via GULFLINE by the graduation application deadline posted on the Academic Calendar for a given semester. Students are encouraged to have a pre-graduation check completed by an academic advisor before applying for graduation.

An application for the Associate in Arts degree must be submitted to your academic advisor for approval.
