Student Spotlight of the Week

August 31, 2020  / Tags: Physical Therapy, DPT, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, Student Spotlight

This week’s Student Spotlight goes to second year physical therapy student, Zoi Barnes. Zoi is originally from Daytona Beach, Florida but now enjoys the relaxed living that the Gulf Coast offers. Zoi knew that physical therapy was the perfect fit for her because she has always loved the idea of optimizing her community’s health and helping them realize their potential, despite injury and illness. She says “PT is a rewarding field that allows me to embody the principle of servant leadership and improve my community’s health at the same time!”

Zoi is an only child and the youngest one in her extended families. Her family is from Nicaragua but she’s the only member in her family not fluent in Spanish. A fun fact about Zoi’s family is that she’s related to Oprah’s boyfriend, Stedman Graham.

When she’s not busy with school, Zoi enjoys reading, playing tennis, going to the theater, and traveling to interesting historical sites and countries. “Sweden has been one of my favorite countries to travel to because of its unique beauty and kind people and I plan to visit again soon!” In the future, Zoi hopes to serve her community through working with performance artists and/or pediatric populations. She would love to work in niche settings and bring awareness to other patient populations that are not traditionally thought of.
