The RERI has published the Lee County Executive Business Climate Survey Report for the second quarter of 2022. The goal of the survey is to capture the assessment of and expectations for the local economy, the workforce, and industry of business owners in Lee County. The RERI uses this information to create the Executive Business Climate Index for Lee County, which the Horizon Council and FGCU have been tracking since 2012.

Greg Collins is an Industrial Sinologist with expertise in global supply chain strategy, operations, and supply chain finance. He has over 20 years of experience in China and Asia, with senior leadership roles at Microsoft, Flex, and Gerber Scientific. Since 2006, Collins is founder and Chief Supply Chain Officer of The Lakeline Group, a Hong Kong and Shanghai-based private equity investment and consulting firm. He has worked with boards, management teams, and supply chains in over 30 countries. He currently teaches Supply Chain Strategy and Operations in the undergraduate and MBA programs at WP Carey School of Business and Executive Education programs at Thunderbird School of Global Management.

The RERI has published Regional Economic Indicators for April 2022. The monthly publication represents a collection and analysis of economic indicators including airport passenger activity, taxable sales, tourist tax revenues, labor force, employment, real estate, and consumer sentiment for the Southwest Florida workforce region.

Issue Brief: Unemployment Levels by Industry

Southwest Florida had a seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8 percent in February 2020. In the following month the Covid-19 pandemic reached the country and the region. The mitigating policies designed to curtail the spread of the virus resulted in a spike in the unemployment rate, rising as high as 13.1 percent by April 2020. The region’s unemployment rate has recovered since this apex, reaching 4.0 percent by December 2021. However, looking at simply the unemployment rate does not tell the complete story. After all, stay-at-home policies, supply chain disruptions, and changes in consumer preferences have impacted industries in various ways. Industries such as financial activities and professional and business services were much more equipped to weather these shocks over other industries such as leisure and hospitality, and education and health services.
