Food and agriculture: an industry with many employment opportunities.

Did you know that the food and ag industry is one of the largest providers of jobs in the U.S.? And direct farm experience is NOT a prerequisite to a well-paying career in the food and agribusiness world.

Numerous supporting businesses are needed to supply farming operations with inputs and services. Once food and fiber are produced, other companies process farm output into food ingredients, prepare and manufacture food, and distribute fresh and processed products to make them available to consumers. Plus, many jobs are needed to support this sector in financial services, education, government, research, journalism, and so forth.

The Agribusiness Minor at FGCU provides you with an opportunity to stand out! Businesses, governments, and other organizations need managers, entrepreneurs, environmentalists, engineers, scientists, regulators, programmers, and many other professionals who understand how the food system works. By 2050, we will have to feed more than 9 billion people. Every year, 60,000 high-skilled job openings are located in the food and agribusiness sectors. For every major offered at FGCU, there is a career waiting for those graduates in the food and agribusiness arena. Presently, many employers cannot find enough graduates with experience in these fields. Sounds like a “sellers” market for new graduates.

The agribusiness minor is designed to prepare you for these challenges. Our courses introduce you to the business of food and agribusiness operation and provide you with a practical understanding of the food system. We rely on guest speakers, visits to companies and food operations, internships, and special projects to provide you with a concrete experience of this industry.

No matter what College you call home, the agribusiness minor will give you an edge upon graduation! Students in the College of Arts and Science will get a chance to add a business specialization to their degree. College of Education students acquire informational content around which they can design educational material. Business and entrepreneurship students will get to learn practical knowledge that can be applied to a wide variety of companies.

Florida needs talents in the food and ag industry

You may be surprised to learn that food and agricultural sector is second only to tourism as Florida’s largest industry. Our unique climate allows us to grow fruits and vegetables for the rest of the country during the winter season. We have access to many commercial ports, which open us up to the international markets. Our tourism industry relies on the food sector for the timely supply of quality foods and allows us to showcase our citrus industry and local farms. Hence, this industry offers many employment opportunities to FGGU's graduates who would want to remain in the region upon completing their degree.

Besides, the food and agricultural sectors are fairly resilient to economic disruptions or downturns. No matter what, everybody will always need to eat. Case in point, during the Covid pandemic workers throughout the food supply chain were considered "essential." With 22 million people to feed within the state, employment in this sector will always remain strong, even during times of crisis.

General Requirements

  • Students must meet with a Lutgert College of Business advisor to declare a minor and review the course requirements.
  • A grade of C or higher is required in all courses for the minor.
  • A minimum of 12 credit hours of the minor must be completed at FGCU.
  • Students desiring certification of a minor and designation on their academic transcript must:
    • Note the minor on the Application for Graduation.
    • Contact a Lutgert College of Business advisor to certify completion of all course requirements for the declared minor as listed below.

Specific Information

Courses used to satisfy one category cannot be used to satisfy another category.  A minimum of 12 credits must be at the 3000-4999 level.
