Mr Tyler Gibson

Tyler Gibson, an FGCU alumnus, serves as an Instructor in the Department of Communication and Philosophy. Since joining full-time in 2023, he has earned a reputation for dynamic, student-centered teaching. Tyler specializes in Public Speaking and Effective Speaking, where he blends communication theory with hands-on activities that build confidence and practical skills.

He was instrumental in creating hybrid course formats that provide flexible learning options, combining in-person and online instruction to better meet diverse student needs. Tyler’s teaching approach emphasizes engagement, inclusivity, and the integration of current media trends. Beyond teaching, he contributes actively to curriculum design and student mentoring initiatives, supporting FGCU’s goals of academic excellence and meaningful community involvement.

Curriculum Development and Instructional Innovation

One of Tyler’s major contributions has been leading the redesign of FGCU’s Public Speaking curriculum. Recognizing the evolving needs of today’s students, he helped develop a hybrid format that combines in-person and online instruction—an approach that enhances access and supports student retention while upholding rigorous academic standards.

Tyler also brings creativity to the classroom through engaging and experiential activities. Examples include “Speed Comms,” a fast-paced conversational exercise, and assignments where students produce influencer-style videos to apply communication theory to real-world contexts. He has participated in instructional design workshops and explored the pedagogical use of AI in higher education.

Student Support and Program Involvement

Student Support

Tyler’s commitment to student development extends beyond the classroom. He actively mentors students and creates supportive learning environments that foster confidence and communication skills. As a faculty partner in FGCU’s R.I.S.E. Program, he supported students with intellectual disabilities and developed a comprehensive progress-tracking template now used across the program. His efforts earned him the 2024–2025 Faculty Partner of the Year award.

He also introduced the Learning Assistant Program to public speaking courses—a first at FGCU—offering students peer support to overcome speech anxiety and enhance classroom engagement.

Campus and Community Engagement

Tyler contributes to the broader FGCU community through various service initiatives. He participates in the Student-Faculty Partnership Program through the Lucas Center and regularly assists in the Communication Lab. He has supported the university’s annual Public Speaking Competition by mentoring participants, creating promotional materials, and securing local sponsorships.

In the 2025–2026 academic year, Tyler will serve as the faculty advisor for Students & Seniors, a student-led organization focused on building intergenerational relationships between FGCU students and senior citizens in the local community.
